“The lover of nature is he whose inward and outward senses are still truly adjusted to each other”

Emphasizing the importance of true and full harmony within a person, Emerson explained how, among society, people are unable to appreciate nature because of the lack of simplicity in society, as well as the complexities of life.

The poem "O Me! O Life!" by Walt Whitman expresses the tenets of Transcendentalism it places emphasis on the individual by using the first-person perspective. The speaker contemplates their own existence and its significance in the world, as he feels small among everything. Additionally, the belief that nature was a source of spiritual insight and inspiration was large in Transcendentalism, and Whitman reflects on "the powerful play of life," an acknowledgment of the profound connection between humans and the natural world. The image expresses this because, as the woman walks around her deserted community, she realizes how small she is in a big, messed up world, but is determined to help.

I am authentic, and will always express my truth, whether it is agreed with or not, fighting for what is right if I believe it is.

Thesis: Transcendentalism teaches people to model themselves after nature in order to become self-reliant individuals who, in turn, are able to fully and positively contribute to society through the emphasis that is placed on the importance of a return to simplicity in life.
1. “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived”(Thoreau, 1854)
2. “The lover of nature is he whose inward and outward senses are still truly adjusted to each other; who has retained the spirit of infancy even into the era of manhood. His intercourse with heaven and earth, becomes part of his daily food. In the presence of nature, a wild delight runs through the man, in spite of real sorrows” (Emerson, 1844).
3. "To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, — that is genius."(Emerson, 1841).
4. “it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude” (Emerson, 1841).
5. “Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist” (Emerson, 1841).
6. “Civil Disobedience”, in which he composed a series of essays that condemn the government throughout the writing, he emphasizes that all must “Let your life be a counter-friction to stop the machine”(Thoreau, 1849).

In the image, the man embraces simplicity through his approach to nature, where he just stops to reflect alone, not fleeing to society, but to nature, for answers to his questions.
