They wouldn't calm down and it resulted in me raising my voice higher and higher until I was practically screaming. Even though eventually this worked I knew right away this wasn't the kind of teacher I wanted to be. I discovered a 'group points' system that worked perfectly with that particularly difficult group of students, and now after almost 10 years of teaching I can easily find a solution to the problem on the spot. My trick is to solve the problem RIGHT AWAY - and not give it a chance to escalate or for me to lose my temper.
