She also suffered at the hands of a family associate around the age of seven: During a visit with her mother, Angelou was raped by her mother's boyfriend. Then, as vengeance for the sexual assault, Angelou's uncles killed the boyfriend. So traumatized by the experience, Angelou stopped talking. She returned to Arkansas and spent years as a virtual mute.

His lifetime achievements are so numerous it’s hard to believe they were all carried out by the same person.

In May 1862, while the ship’s three white officers were ashore in Charleston, Smalls and eight other enslaved crewmen stole the boat. Smalls dressed in a Captain’s uniform and sailed to a nearby wharf to collect all the crew’s family members who were hiding there. He was then able to manoeuvre past the five Confederate forts who were guarding the harbour by supplying the correct secret signals
