On March 25, 1911 a dropped cigarette started a fire in the Triangle factory that killed 145 people. Most of the people working in the factory were women, and they worked in terrible conditions for little pay. The factory owners, Harris and Blanck ordered the door in the factory to be locked at all times to prevent workers from leaving early. This made is nearly impossible for the workers to leave during the fire, so they burned to death. This majorly impacted the conditions of factory workers, States passed laws shortening work hours and raising pay.

Marry Harris Jones, aka Mother Jones, founded the Social Democratic Party. She was born in 1830, in Ireland. Her family moved to the United States during the potato famine. She married George Jones and had several children, but they all died during an outbreak of yellow fever. After all of this, she joined the Knights of Labor and traveled to numerous strike sites, helping coal miners. She became an active campaigner for the United Mine Workers Union. She was considered by the authorities to be one of the most dangerous women in America and was even sentenced to 20 years in prison. She lived to be 100 years old and is a prime example of what a strong female leader looks like. She never gave up and worked tirelessly to help the working class.

Harriet was born in 1811, in Connecticut. Her father was a preacher and a leader in an antislavery movement, this taught her to hate slavery as well. She married Calvin Stowe, and the two of them often gave shelter to runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad. Harriet connected with slaves and understood their pain because when slaved women gave birth, their child was taken from them and sold by the owner. 4 of 7 of Harriet's children died due to illness. At the age of 41, Harriet wrote "Uncle Toms's Cabin" and it was the most powerful attack on slavery of its time. It showed the hardships faced by slaves daily and sold more than 3,000 copies on its first day. After she wrote her book, more people started helping slaves escape to the North. When she met President Abe Lincoln he said to her, "So you're the little lady who stated the Civil War!"

Women during the Civil War

When men went off to fight in the war, women took their places in factories, stores, and low level government office jobs. Women worked in factories, canning food and making cigars. Women excepted low wages out of desperation to support their family. Many women also took up Benevolent work during the Civil War, rolling bandages, knitting socks, sewing clothing, tents, flags, and blankets for the soldiers. Women became Nurses during the Civil War, helping to establish this as a career for women. This was an important event in women history because it was basically the beginning of the nursing career for females and this has a major impact on me because I want to be a nurse.
