The Kathmandu Post newspaper reported at a Cabinet meeting in late June that authorities decided to revise casino rules in 2013 to allow casinos and electronic game venues to operate up to 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) from international borders.

Under the original provisions, such venues had to be at least 5 kilometers away from international borders.

According to the newspaper, many casino resorts are currently being built to serve cross-border customers from nearby India.

A senior official at the tourism ministry, which issues casinos and electronic game licenses, said the ministry has proposed new measures to boost tourism. "There is no logic in restricting casinos within certain areas or streets," the official told the Kathmandu Post. "The key requirement is to properly monitor casinos," he added.

The newspaper quoted another official from the ministry as saying the ministry was preparing a new casino law that would become part of Nepal's new tourism law.
