NoS2. Students should be able to recognise questions that are appropriate for scientific investigation, pose testable hypotheses, and evaluate and compare strategies for investigating hypotheses.

This Learning Outcome links to BW7 as students should be able to form appropriate hypotheses when analysing and understanding both processes. They should be able to explore the factors that affect both processes.

NoS7 Students should be able to organise and communicate their research and investigative findings in a variety of ways fit for purpose and audience, using relevant scientific terminology and representations.

This Learning Outcome links to BW7 as students will investigate factors that affect both processes. This learning outcome addresses the key skills (communicate their research and investigative findings) the students will require when presenting the results of their investigation.

NoS10 Students should be able to appreciate the role of science in society; and its personal, social and global importance; and how society influences scientific research.  In BW7 students will discusses the importance of photosynthesis in the industry of food and organic matter in ecosystems when investigating the factors that affect both respiration and photosynthesis.

Other Science Strands:

ES5. Students should be able to describe the cycling of matter, including that of carbon and water, associating it with biological and atmospheric phenomena. 

Students can link the cycling of matter to both the chemical and biological processes when photosynthesis takes place the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and water is converted into organic compounds (glucose). Respiration impacts the cycle of matter as carbon dioxide and water are products of respiration which get released into the atmosphere so that the carbon dioxide can be used in the carbon cycle.

4. Being Literate- the students will have the opportunity to develop their literacy skills when learning and presenting the different processes that take place in both respiration and photosynthesis.

It touches on how essential the energy that is produced through photosynthesis is in contributing to the biosphere's energy flow. This was also incorporated in my planning when linking my learning outcome BW7 to NoS10 but this time it was in relation to informing the students to appreciate the role of both respiration and photosynthesis and its global importance.

It discusses how the byproducts of photosynthesis are required for respiration to take place. I have used this in my planning when relating my learning outcome BW7 to other science strands in this case it was the ES5 relating how respiration impacts the cycle of matter.

It gives an insight into the excess addition of carbon dioxide from human activities for example burning fossil fuels and how it negatively impacts photosynthetic organisms. I have used this insight in my planning when discussing my learning outcome BW7 which involves investigating the factors that affect specifically photosynthesis and linking this view to my other science strand ES5. This insight is also incorporated in the values section under unpacking the learning.
