The Porfiriato was the government of Porfirio Díaz in Mexico, from 1877 to 1911, characterized by economic modernization (growth of railroads, industry, and mining) and political stability imposed by force. Despite material progress and the creation of an elite, this period of more than 30 years was marked by enormous social inequality, repression of dissent, and labor exploitation, which eventually led to the Mexican Revolution in 1910.
