Owen Intermediate Information for Success by Jason Salhaney

Welcome to Owen Intermediate School. Owen is a special school as it falls in between the elementary and middle school. It comes with its own set of challenges with issues related to the social emotional and educational markers of students at this age. I have had an amazing five-year journey with lots of successes and areas that still need improvement. Whether you are a newbie or an experience, principal, I urge you to continue some of our major programs such as PBIS, our MTSS process, leadership structure, WIN, etc. In this paddlet in, I am going to provide you with lots of links and information. I wish that when I began at new buildings someone provided this for me. Please keep moving the building forward. Listen to what the staff is saying, but push them to do better. No

Anchor charts are an instructional strategy we use and developed through the school improvement process. They tend to do them well in the beginning of the year and as they go on, they do fewer. I have linked presentations and expectations we have for them. I recommend that every couple months you have them bring a sample to a staff meeting and do a gallery walk. Each department has identified at least three all teachers will create during each cardmarking.

Here are my recommendations for staffing based on the last five years.

I would split up Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Jones in the fifth grade. Mrs. Moore is a newer teacher and has tons of potential, but needs someone different to help push her to be better.

I would recommend that you split up the partnership between Mrs. Cook and Mrs. Bias. They tend to overly on each other and parents get frustrated with it.

Mrs. Schubert is new to our building and this will be her first full year. Putting her with a new partner is needed. She currently works with Mr. Jablinski who relies a lot, their teaching partner to make decisions, etc. this can be exhausting for the other teacher.

Our music teacher left at the end of last year. Kids are not fond of music class and it has always been a struggle for whatever Teacher is in there. I would recommend that you find a different class to be taught a performing arts. Class might be a better choice, that included singing, acting, dancing, and musical instruments. Mrs. Safiedine has some great ideas.

Mr. Dudley has made some great improvements this year but monitor the relationships he is building with students.

Mr. Jablinski, Mrs. Bennet and Mrs. Bugescu struggle with class management. They need lot of support with setting routines, expectations, etc..

Mrs. Bugescu has an alternative certification. Program is not high-quality and she struggles with core instructional practices.

On Wednesday I send the Wednesday whip around, which is just more specific information they need for the end of the week.

I sent out a ParentSquare message to staff at 6 pm on Sundays letting them know that the tiger times has been published. I have always included some type of short inspirational video with the message. I get these from the following: I highly recommend that you subscribe to this person. For the past two years, we have run a program called Book Nook. I believe it runs for 15 weeks three days after school.—Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 3-4. The first half is homework support and the second half is a live tutoring session. There is no transportation provided.

For the past two years, Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Miloser, and Mysliwiec have run the program.

The building is assigned one security guard. In the morning, they are assigned to the crosswalk and in the afternoon they man the spot where parents pick up and the buses cross. Their job at the end of the day is to make sure that no one enters the bus lane and, when the buses are leaving, no one gets in the middle of them in the morning. They keep cars from pulling down in front of the school. During the day they help supervise at lunch, get students for hall, escorts, and our constantly checking bathrooms. They should always be walking around the building. Again, set expectations for them from the beginning. Also, work with them about how to interact with students and not be confrontational. They traditionally struggle with this.
