Also, there is an 'inner edge', namely the mouth of the cowrie, which has these kind of grooved teeth! 
2) Like a sphere, the cowrie has lots of curved edges and so the shading will mostly change gradually & smoothly...but like a cylinder, there are definite planes within those curves (like the brightest highlight on the top portion, and also the bottom portion near the teeth).

The hardest for me to draw was the bright highlight at the top, because I don't have a white pencil to really make it pop. I think the shadow came out really well.
