One thing I learned from Module one, was that Individualism should not be used to solve bigger issues. We should look at things as a system, to tackle the system as a whole instead of looking at it in that smaller lens. Tackling these issues this way can have a bigger impact because you look at it from a different perspective, and how society perpetuates certain issues within these institution as a whole. Looking at things with the individualist perspective will never be a viable solution because it doesnt look deep enough into how society can perpetuate it, and how they tie into other institutions as well.

One thing I learned from module two was that people can use their race to empower themselves, and embrace the differences they have rather than let society use it to ostracize and "other them." I have seen this in real life, specifically in the media. People use the traits that society usually look down upon and have turned them into key parts of their identity that they have chosen to celebrate. It sort of allows them to reclaim the perception of these certain traits, and turn it into something positive rather than something to be used against them.

One thing I learned from Module 3 is that as much as social media can be used to educate others on topics of race, it can be used to divide others and spread hateful views. There is a lot that goes into this spread of hate, it targets people under the guise of being a joke. People can use this argument to excuse their bigotry, claiming that it is not that serious, and only a joke. This is extremely dangerous because these hate symbols and speech are not being taken as exactly what they are, so they are being used to perpetuate hate against minorities. This is something I myself have come across on the internet, the issue with these memes is how normalized they have become over the years. They spread like wildfire and serve as sort of a gateway into racist ideologies and rhetoric.

One thing I learned from Module 5 was what "color blind" privilege is. White people can be very defensive when their privilege comes up, and deny race being involved in their success . Essentially, in their eyes, race is not an important factor in society, people's success and shortcomings are related to their own abilities. They think that this is a good thing, because they don't treat others based on their race. However, this is a very reductive way of thinking that dismisses the adversities people face based on their race. This is where the privilege comes in, someone who is white does not have to face obstacles directly based on their race. A person of color has to work harder to be taken seriously, so for whites to say it has "nothing to do with race" are being ignorant to the injustice and racism still affecting people in their day to day lives.

One thing I learned from Module 4 is that microagressions can actually be comments that sound nice initially, but actually have a double meaning to them. They can also be as simple as a "where are you from" question.I remember in high school I was talking to one of my peers, and he cut me off while I was talking to ask me if english was my second language. I replied yes to this, which prompted him to respond "I can tell." I found that comment to be so rude so I asked him why he thought that, to which he said it was because of how I phrased the sentence I was saying. I was shocked by that interaction because he said he didn't mean it with any bad intentions, but it was very clear that what he said was rude and ignorant.

One thing I learned was the Authenticity Dilemma. This is a gap between ethnic identities, and how one is perceived by others. A common question one can be asked is "where are you really from" usually coming from a white person. Also, the first thing white people see is asian person, not an American. I remember this happening to my friend, who is vietnamese. She was born and raised here in the bay area and another student asked the exact same question when she said she was born here.

In this module, I got to learn about the white beauty standard and how it affects us. It also has a huge impacts on different cultures. For example, there are lightening creams that are prevalent in many countries, and double eyelid tape in asian countries. For me personally, growing up with latino culture has really has exposed me to these white beauty standards. Family members would warn their children to not be outside for too long in fears that they would get too tan. White beauty standards are put on a pedestal in many cultures, to the point where one feels like they have to change parts of themselves to fit them.

In this module, I learned that immigrants are statistically less likely to commit crimes compared to american born citizens. This is a topic personal to me, I have family members who are undocumented and have not committed a single crime in their lives. They are terrified to even get a speeding ticket, because even that can possibly lead them to being deported and losing the lives they have made her in the United States. There is such a misconception that immigrants commit more crime, when they cant afford to make these mistakes or else they can loose their lives.

In this module, I learned more about racial profiling and the culture surrounding it. Racism is embedded in the criminal justice system, and bleeds into each institution. The structure is rooted in racism so that is why we often see police officers exhibiting racist and dangerous behavior. I think that this is the reason why there is such a disproportionate number of black people being mistreated by cops compared to any other race, because it is practiced within the system itself and has been for a long time.

In this module, there was a lot of focus on gender, sex and the stereotypes that come along with those. Asian womens are seen as sexual objects, typically for white mens fantasies. They are also seen as passive and give everything to their partners. This stereotype is very harmful, and a lot of asian women don't fit these rigid stereotypes. I have seen this type of stereotype on social media. There was a couple (an asian women and white man) on social media. The comments were filled with congratulating the man, and berating the woman and accusing her of wanting him for a green card. People in those comments saw this woman as solely an object, not as a person.

This module taught me about the discrimination in the school system. Black and brown students statistically perform at lower levels compared to their white counterparts. However, these same schools are not given the same amount in funding at all. In elementary school, I went to a mostly hispanic school. When I went to middle school (a majority white school) it was apparent that it received so much more funding. This happens all throughout the country, white schools are given more resources. This is very contradictory because it would be assumed that since black and brown schools underperform, they should receive more resources. This isn't the case though, these schools lack the proper funding to provide equal opportunities.

In this module, I learned that black women are 3-4x likely to die during childbirth compared to other women. Black womens concerns aren't taken as seriously in hospitals, which is what leads to this statistic. Not that long ago, four nurses were fired for making tik tok videos of their client "icks." This caused black women to come out and tell their stories of the negligence they experienced at the hands of the same hospital where these women worked at, where they suffered complications. This is a real life example of how this statistic is very real and alarming.
