Nationalists? Nationalists rebels were fascists who were strictly against the current communist Spanish government, and believed that the Catholic Church should be involved in legislation. Nationalists were heavily backed up by fascist dictators, Hitler and Mussolini who were trying to get rid of communism and capitalism influences in Europe. Francisco Franco, became the fascist dictator of Spain from 1939-1975.
Republicans/Loyalists? Republicans were part of the legitimate democratically elected government that held many leftists views and believed in the separation between the church and the state, supported by, communist power, the USSR. Although there were many Republican sympathizers such as Britain, France and the US, these countries stayed neutral inorder to minimize war tensions between the Axis powers.
Some Historians argue that the Spanish Civil War is the actual beginning of WWII, to what extent do you agree or disagree and why?
Although the Spanish Civil War helped Germany and Italy test out their military power such as air bombing carried out in the small Basque town of Guernica in 1937 by Nazi and Italian bombers, I would argue that this is not true to a large extent since so many of the Allies stayed neutral when the nationalist rebellion occurred, that it did not have the same chain-reaction that Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939 have in setting off the beginning of WWII.
