"Behaviorist theory does not explain how any novel utterance is produced, even those that are grammatically correct" (61). My son pronounced the word pretzel as "dahbish," and it wasn't until I mimicked him, walking around the kitchen repeating "dahbish" back to him as I searched for his meaning, that he pointed to the cupboard with the pretzels and when I opened it, he declared, "Dahbish" with glee. Oh! Maybe my example relates more to Interactionist Theory. Must keep reading...

Noam Chomsky (1928 - present... despite reports of his death!) proposed the theory that children acquire their grammar skills through an innate biological ability known as the "language acquisition device" (LAD) (61). Chomsky thought children innately understood, and were able to speak, language without requiring parental teaching or reinforcement. This theory suggests that humans are born with a predisposition for language and possess a universal grammar that is the basis for all human languages.
