Some may lack foundational prerequisite mathematics that they need and this makes them unready, but through the right experiences, high expectations from others, and a growth mindset, these prerequisite skills can be obtained.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think it is all about mindset. I have had students who have never really been challenged in mathematics before come into my class and have to really deeply think and work hard in mathematics for the first time. On the other side, I have had students who have always been told, sometimes by their parents, that they are not good at math, and so they have not heard that yes, they can do this math. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think we need to educate parents about the importance of what they say to their children, and how these mindsets they may have can have a huge impact on their students. Emphasize that we are on the same team and that we truly believe that any and all of our students can be successful in math through hard work, and expect their support in this.</div>]]></description>

Some students believe that they are bad at math and will never be good at math. At some point, they will fail at mastering a skill set on the first attempt, if we have created the mindset in them, that they are capable, they know that they can "struggle" through some portions of the material to gain a better understanding and develop some "math sense."</div>]]></description>

         <title>I have many students who think they are math-illiterate before they step in my door. They also lack many skills that are fundamental for success in middle school math. Therefore, their mindset of not being good at math is enforced. Students need to experience success in order to move on to new concepts.</title>
