Respond to the two questions related to your purpose for reading. Also respond one post from a classmate: (1) How have Elie’s feelings towards God changed since his captivity began? Choose a quote that shows this. (2) Elie encounters both kindness and cruelty in the camp on a daily basis. Choose one example of each, and explain how Elie is affected by these different interactions.

1. "'Where He is? This is where—hanging here from this gallows...'". This shows that Elie's feelings towards his god have changed because he feels like his god died along with the boy, he feels abandoned and helpless.
2. He finds kindness when he meets Yossi and Tibi, they watch out for him and he watches out for them, he also feels safe around them because he trusts them. "The veterans grabbed the opportunity for further sniggering: 'Now you'll really get a taste of camp!'" This is cruelty because all of the prisoners should stick together but instead they are hurting one another and being rude.

They praise Your name!" (Pg. 68) Before all of this happened Elise fully believed and trusted in his God, he even wanted to learn more about mystic Judaism. But now after all that had happened he feels angry, hurt, and betrayed by the God who he believed would protect him. He doesn't understand why his God would allow so many people to die in such horrendous ways. In this quotes you can see how Elie is questioning his Gods silence as the rest of the Jews suffer for believing in him, and yet still even as they're betrayed by him they still believe and worship him.
2) One kind thing that happend to Elie was when he made friends with Tibi and Yossi and they told him that his name wasn't written down

In the beginning of his time at camp he still liked his God but often asked why did he do nothing about the evil that is happening, but now in the story he Feels that his God has done nothing for him and he should not be celabrated. A quote that supports this is on page 68 at the top half of the page it states that"you have betrayed, allowing them to be torchered, slaughtered, gassed and burned" this shows that they are being torchered and they think that they aren't being helped. One example of kindness is on page 71 when they are giving them advice on how to pass the selection. This is kind because they are helping them live another day in camp. An example of curelty is on page 74 when he finds out that his father was selected. He was almost in tears, and this shows curelty for him but it is not bad for other but just for him because Ellie only lived for his dad and no other person or himself.

His belief in God is still there, but he generally looks to God in anger towards his lack of action to stop the madness that transpired throughout the holocaust. "What does Your grandeur mean, Master of the Universe, in the face of all this cowardice, this decay, and this misery?"
When Elie first comes to Auschwitz, the man in charge of their black gives them an inspiring speech. Elie describes them as the first human words. This definitely helped Elie morally, knowing it wasn't only monsters that lived alongside him. When Elie's supervisor wants his hold crown, he beats his father until Elie gives in. This was bad for Elie, as he lost his crown, but he also started to second guess his relationship with some of his fellow inmates.

1-Before Ellie went through the camp he found God to be his relaxation and his comfort. He knew that god was someone who looked after him but now Ellie looks at God and has anger because he doesn't understand why he would be put in this situation. On page 67 Ellie says "Why would I bless him? Every fiber in me rebelled. Because he caused thousands of children to burn in his mass graves..." at this point in the story Ellie is talking about weather not to fast and follow Gods rules. God has put him through enough and Ellie realizes that he is already fasting 24/7. This is a part of anger that Ellie shows and how he look s at God. The way Ellie looks at him has change do tramendously because of the camp.
2-Ellie experiences kindness and cruelty when he is fed very little. Kindness can be shown in they way they are fed because they are fed food which is kind but not much at all which is not kind and is cruelty. They are being suffered for no reasons but because of who they are and that I should cruelty itself. There is no specific page that you can mark for this because I find it's everywhere.

Ellies overall opinion has really changed throughout the book. At the begining, he really talked about God and how he wanted to become this high level of Judaism and more. But since he's been in the camp, he was confused where God was. He thought he betraye them by letting this horrible thing happen. "Why would I bless him?.. Because he caused thousands of children to burn in his mass grave,"-Page 67. This really shows what his thoughts have been recently on god. He feels like it's his fault all of this is happening because he isn't doing anything about it. In conclusion, his opinion has really changed over time.

He has many different interactions with people in the camp. One of kindness would be the way the doctor treated him with his foot. He gave him good food and helped him when he was nervous about the his procedure. He also had him rest up and get strong enough to go back. But there was also bad encounters with people at camp. Well, one on the guards was cruel to them when working. He whipped Ellie and beat his dad with a medal pipe for not working as much or slowing down.
