  • Pragmatists are keen on trying out ideas, theories and techniques to see if they work in practice. 
  • They search out new ideas and take the first opportunity to experiment with applications. 
  • They get on with things and act quickly and confidently on ideas that attract them. 
  • They tend to be impatient with ruminating and open-ended discussions. 
  • They are practical, down to earth and enjoy solving problems. 
  • They respond to problems and opportunities 'as a challenge'. Their philosophy is "There is always a better way" and "If it works it's good".

  • Pragmatists are real-world problem solvers. They want to see how to put their learning into practice in the real world. 
  • They are more hands on and therefore are not as reluctant to try out things
  • They instill confidence in their own abilities and are not afraid to fail
  • They are likely to experiment so they are may find the best way to go about things so they are not rigid in their approach to things

  • Pragmatists also need clear guidelines for assessments, and to be clear what is required.

  • Learning techniques to deal with inpatience, such as pomodoro techniques for revision

  • Establishing importance as a way of boosting motivation: Start the lesson with a menti quiz asking: Why learning how to break bad news is important?/The impact of breaking bad news badly on patient's and their families?
  • Relevance: Explaining that breaking bad news is an important skill even as an F1 when you may be tasked with breaking bad news 
  • Use real-life case studies 
  • Break off into pairs for role play
  • Teach clear guidance and structure but also encourage to watch out for emotional cues 
  • Pragmatist may benefit hugely from bedside teaching - watching a doctor give bad news and appraise what went well/could've been improved afterwards.
