They swept streets, cleaned latrines , and begged for money. Actually begging was fairly common if you didn't have a job.

They couldn't enter temples, schools, or even drink from the wells caste members used. They often had no rights at all. They lived away from other castes. In some places the sight of untouchables was considered impure, but everywhere the touch of an untouchable was impure.
