Verb Phrases/Finite and Infinite Verbs/Noun Phrases/Pre and Post Modifiers

Before this course, in my classes, grammar teaching is secondary - mostly incidental. Now, I find myself thinking about grammar first for many of my lessons. It has been a painful, hard and an uncomfortable reboot of my teaching approach.

The teaching of EL grammar and syntax is a dance between incidental and focused noticing; between inductive and deductive reasoning; between teacher-centric and student-led approaches.

It is VERY SURPRISING how enjoyable, organic and dynamic my teaching and learning of EL grammar have become.

Word classes - and how meaning, form and function can affect which word class a word belongs.

After Lesson 2, I am not more confident to explain the various verb groups to my students. Especially on tense vs aspect vs voice.

I think grammar must never be taught in isolation. We should approach a particular unit plan and infuse grammar items into the unit. As we design SOWs and year plans, we need to see the progression from Year 1 - Year 4 and ensure that there is a comprehensive approach to teaching of grammar infused in our SOW/year plans.
