Self-care deficit occurs when a person is unable to perform the functions required to maintain health and well-being. The purpose of the Self-Care Deficit Theory is to guide treatment that maintains patient autonomy over self-care (McEwen & Wills, 2018).
Scope: Grand Nursing Theory Based on Human Needs (McEwen & Wills, 2018)
Origin: Orem was a lifelong researcher and nurse advocate. She was an extremely influential thinker, and her work molded the the holistic approach that nurses currently practice. She dedicated her work to being a private duty nurse, hospital staff nurse, educator, faculty and eventually the Dean for Catholic University. The seed for Orem's theory was planted when she and her colleagues began creating a curriculum for practical nursing. After writing a book, she worked more on her theory about nursing and the concept of self-care. Orem's theory was nested with three theories: theories of self-care, self-care deficit, and nursing systems. In the figure below, it is shown visually how nursing systems encompass self-care deficit and self-care theory (McEwen & Wills, 2018).
