The Martian 🔴 - Andy Weir

‘The Martian’ is an amazing science fiction novel written by Andy Weir. Mark Watney, a NASA astronaut is the protagonist of the book.
In this story, Watney along with his six crew-mates goes to Mars as part of the Ares-3 mission. The mission was planned such that the crew spent 31 sols (1 sol = 1 Mars day) on Mars. However, on sol 6, they faced a catastrophic wind of 175kmph, which was more than what they could withstand. Therefore, they had to abort the mission. While trying to return to the spacecraft, Watney was blown away.
The crew along with the whole world believed that he was dead, but no. By the time Watney regained consciousness, the crew had left for Earth. He was badly injured and had to perform nine stitches for himself. He thought of communicating with the Earth via the MAV (Mars Ascent Vehicle), but the crew had took it back. Now, his only hope for life was to get to the Ares-4 site by the time it lands on Mars (4 years later). He did not have enough food supplies for him to last that long, but he was a botanist. He came up with the idea of farming potatoes in the Hab (The Mars Lander Habitat). He covered the Hab with Martian soil and a layer of Earth soil (which he had brought for experiments) and started farming. He still did not have an idea as to how he would communicate with Earth.
But back on Earth, NASA had been tracking Watney using satellites since sol 49. They had initially believed that he was dead but a satellite image showed camps near the Hab and in another, him doing an EVA. They hadn’t informed the rest of the crew about this. They observed him move in pursuit of finding the Pathfinder (a robotic spacecraft) which was non-functional but still gave him hope. After reaching Hab, he had to do some repairing on the Pathfinder and Sojourner (he was a mechanical engineer too). To his luck, he was able to send signals to Earth and receive replies. Thus he had established communication with Earth successfully.
After some days NASA launched ‘Iris 1’ which contained food and other items for Watney. But it was unsuccessful. Then, they proposed a plan which included Hermes (the spacecraft in which the rest of the crew was travelling). The plan was to – first send the supplies and food using Chinese booster and dock it with Hermes in space, then send Hermes back and perform a close flyby with Mars during which Watney should be launched from the Ares 4 site using its MAV and reach Hermes. It was a game between life and death. It meant that Watney must travel about 3200km to reach Schiaparelli crater (Ares 4 site). He faced many challenges but succeeded. Beck was the first person whom he saw in about 18 months. They finally reaches Earth safely. 🌍

I like this book because it is a very interesting sci-fiction revolving around Mars. I too wish to be an astronaut. 👩‍🚀

Shivendu J
VII C

The Man-Eater of Malgudi by R.K.Narayan

The man-eater of malgudi is one of the finest works of Narayan. In this novel, Narayan allegorically depicts that evil is self-destructive by employing the bhasmasura myth. the title of the novel is ironic for the man-eater in the novel is not a tiger but a mighty man, vasu, who not only kills a number of wild animals but also kills himself with a single blow of his hammer-like fist.
The story revolves around a person named Nataraj, a printer of malgudi who is the tragic-comic hero of the story.in his printing work he is assisted by Mr.sastri who is a compositor, proofreader and a machine man, all rolled into one.his companions were a poet who's engaged in writing about the life of Lord Krishna and Mr.Sen, the journalist who always runs down Nehru.
Everything was smooth until the arrival of vasu, the powerful taxidermist who comes to stay with them as a tenant in a room in the upper storey of the printing press.he is a very tall and bulky man with a bull neck hammer-like fist and aggressive behaviour. Nataraj tolerated him in his room upstairs till he makes himself unbearable by robbing mempi forest of its wildlife and collecting dead animals in his room for suffering them. when even Nataraja's neighbours complain to him about the unsanitary conditions of the neighbourhood, he requests vasu to find a new house for himself.
The taxidermist treats this as an insult and sues him for harassing and trying to evict him by unlawful means.but an old lawyer friend of Nataraj, save him from clutches of law.soon after Vasu starts bringing Rangi, a notorious dancer and some other women to his room, to the great nuisance of all concerned. But vasu cares too hoots for their feelings.
The crisis, however, comes to a head when the pitiless taxidermist threatens to kill Kumar, a temple elephant who is to be taken in a festival procession organized to celebrate the poet’s completion of his religious epic on God Krishna. Nataraj is very fond of the elephant, Kumar. He becomes naturally upset the moment he learns from Rangi that Vasu intends to shoot the elephant on the night of the proposed procession.
Nataraj immediately with the help of a friend, the poet, the lawyer, and other important people of the town reported the matter to the police authorities but they express their inability to take any action against him until the crime has been actually committed. The very thought of the temple-elephant, Kumar’s murder, drives Nataraj crazy.
As the procession passes in front of the printing press, his heart begins to beat pit a pat with fear. But the procession passes away without any untoward incident.
Freed from a nagging worry, Nataraj goes to his office in the morning. To his utter shock and dismay, he learns that Vasu, the taxidermist is dead. The police authorities of the town suspected; Nataraj, his friends, and Rangi, the temple dancer and they were interrogated by the police. From the medical report, it is gathered that Vasu had died of a concussion received on his right forehead from a blunt instrument. When the police fail to find any clue of the culprit, the matter is dropped. Rangi later tells them that while striking a mosquito that settled on his forehead, Vasu slapped his temple and died instantaneously. He thus died of his own hammer-like fist.
The novel has a well-knit plot and a fine gallery of vivid, life-like characters. The character of Vasu, the central figure is a masterpiece. The narration is enlivened by Narayan’s comic vision which very often and mingles with pathos.

Thamanna Yasar
X C

THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL - ANNE FRANK

This is a diary, written by a girl named Anne Frank. She was a German-Dutch Diarist of the Jewish origin. She had written the diary during the period from 1942 to 1944. She started writing her diary at the age of 13. She had to live in a secret Annexe, because she was a Jew. She wrote about all the problems she faced because of being a Jew (Jews in Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe were being persecuted in that period). The most interesting part starts when she moved to the secret Annexe, leaving her most loved pet cat Moortje, her belongings, her friends etc. She lost her happiness. She was very scared to leave and get caught by the policemen, she was just 13, she had a whole life waiting for her she had her dreams of becoming a journalist. She spent 3 years in the secret Annexe with her elder sister Margot Frank, her mother Edith Frank, her father Otto Frank and the Van Pels family with an old man. They were caught at Midnight in the starting year of 1945. Later she got transported to Auschwitz with her sister Margot and died at the end of Feburary or the early March. Otto Frank (Anne's father) was the only one survived (with Anne's diary). He then published her beloved daughter Anne Frank's diary. It is a very interesting book which gives us a peek into the lives and the struggles of Jews during World War II. I like books which are related to History and helps us to know about the past. These types of books are always interesting (in my opinion), so I suggest (the reader) to read this book .
Thank you,

By : Kritika Ranjan
Class : VII B

This is a book written by Roald Dahl, a famous British novelist. The story is about a poor child who loves chocolate very much. He gets only one chocolate once a year on his birthday. His father couldn't afford a single chocolate because he was a tooth paste cap closer and his salary was just 1 pound (97 rupees) a one month and that wasn't even affordable to feed the whole family as the family consisted of seven people. One day Charlie's grandfather told him the story about Wonka, a chocolate maker in their place. Wonka was very famous because of his chocolates and other sweets. He could make ice creams which could stay without melting even without a refrigerator for more than 48 hours. He made bubble gums which could become as big as sumo wrestlers . He was very mysterious . He wasn't seen anywhere other than his pictures in the wrappers of the chocolate. No one went inside or outside the factory. The only thing that came out of the factory were chocolates.
This is only a brief summary. I have read this book from the virtual library posted by respected library madam. You too can read it from there.

SREEHARI V J
VI C

No one went inside the factory and no one came outside but works were done in the factory and chocolates made in the factory were the best .
One day in a newspaper news about Mr Wonka's message was published and it said about the golden tickets . The five children who finds the five golden tickets kept in different parts of the world inside any bar of Wonka' s chocolate will be invited to Wonka ' s factory with their family and all the secrets of the factory will be shared with them . All the children started searching for the golden tickets .
And here comes the day two children Augustus Gloop and Veruca Salt found the first and the second golden tickets . Charlie was excited because his birthday has arrived and he will get a chocolate . Charlie expected the golden ticket will be there in the bar of chocolate but it was not there .
The very next day two more tickets were found by Violet Beauregarde and Mike Teavee . Only one more ticket was left . One day our Charlie found some money lying in the ground and he bought chocolates . Inside the first chocolate nothing was there what he expected but he enjoyed and now the miracle happened , he found the fifth golden ticket inside the second bar of chocolate . It became a great news for newspapers .
The day for going to Wonka' s factory arrived finally and all the finders along with their parents went in front of the big door of the factory . Charlie was with his old grandpa Joe . Mr Wonka was inviting each one to the factory and he started showing all the wonderful chocolate rooms of the factory . He said that his workers were not humans and they were the Oompa - loompas who needed coco for living and it was available enough in his factory , so he brought them from their land . All of them were fascinated by the adventures in the factory but during their journey slowly one by one started leaving the group when they enters in trouble . Finally our Charlie and grandpa Joe was left .
The next journey was in the glass elevator . It was a thrilling adventure to Charlie and his grand father . The elevator went up and down and at last it stayed up . From there Mr Wonka showed all others who were in the factory , they all looked strange since each one of them faced troubles because of their eagerness .
Mr Wonka loved his factory very much and he said Charlie that his factory will be your's from now since I am old enough to look after the factory and you can stay in my factory with your whole family . Charlie and his grand father was surprised hearing this . Then the elevator went to Charlie ' s small house for taking others to the factory . The whole family was starving . When they saw Charlie , Grandpa Joe and Wonka , they all were surprised and Charlie explained the whole story to others . Now all the four grandparents , Charlie , his parents and Mr Wonka were ready for the journey through the glass elevator to the chocolate factory .
I Liked this book because it is an adventurous and thrilling story where we feel like we are inside the story .
THANK YOU

Devika S Lal
I X C

Ramayana

Ramayana is a mythology of Indians.
So very very long back –
In the city of Ayodhya, King Dashrath ruled with his three wives Queen Kaushalya, Kaikeyi And Sumitra. The king, queens and people living in Ayodhya were very happy because they had nothing to worry about. But, King Dashrath was worried, the reason for it was that they had no children, which also meant that they had no heir. So one day, King Dashrath performed Putrakameshti and after some days Queen Kaushalya gave birth to Ram, Queen Kaikeyi to Bharat and Queen Sumitra to Laxman and Shatrughna. Dashrath would play with all his four sons happily. When playing in teams, Lakshman would always play with Ram and Shatrughna with Bharat. When they grew up a little more they got trained in the Vedas, Vedangas, martial arts etc. After the training, a Rishi came and said to Dasrath that he is doing a Yajna of six days but he cannot complete It because the monsters are coming and ruining everything. So to complete the Yajna he wanted Ram. When Dashrath Heard this he said my Ram is Just a child how he can kill the monsters, if you would say I will take all my army including me. But Rishi said no only Ram can kill them. So Dashrath said okay But please take Laxman also with you because Ram and Lakshman has never been without each other. So Qureshi said okay. So Ram, Laxman and Rishi started going . When they reached the Ashram the other Rishi’s were very happy to see Rama and Lakshman. Other day the Rishis started doing Yajna and Rama Lakshmana with a bow and arrow where ready to kill the monsters if they come. Five days everything was alright on the six day the monsters came to ruin the Yajna . But Rama and Lakshmana killed them all. When the Yajna was completed the Rishi thanked them and said that King Janaka has a Shiv bow . He wanted Rama and Lakshmana to see it. So they went to Janakpur. King Janaka welcome them. And on the other day King Janaka said who ever can pick The bow I will marry my biggest daughter Sita with him. Everyone tried to picket but picking so far they cannot even move it. So next Ram when and he picked the bow easily. King Janaka married Sita with Ram, Mandvi with Bharat, Urmila with Laxman and Shrutkirti with Shatrughan. Then they went back to Ayodhya. King Dashrath started teaching Ram what are the responsibilities of a king. So next day King Dashrath announced that from tomorrow Ram will be the king. Hearing this everyone where happy except Mantra. (maid of Queen King Kaikeyi)She went to Kaikeyi I am said this news. She was very happy. But Mantra said if Ram will be The king so Bharat will be his slave and queen Kousalya will be mother and you (Queen Kaikeyi) Will be her maid like me.( Mantra ) so Queen Kaikeyi thought yes Mantra Is right. And she went to a room named angry room. When King Dashrath got the news that Queen Kaikeyi went to angry room he immediately rushed there. He saw Queen Kaikeyi has removed all her jewels. He asked her why are you here. She didn’t answer anything are you angry with me. She said yes. But why?? King Dashrath asked, she said do you remember I saved your life and you gave me Two promises. I want those promises now. Darshak said okay whatever you say I will give you. So Kaikeyi said first except Ram Bharat will be the king and Ram should go to the forest for 14 years. Hearing this Dashrath fell on the ground and fainted. In the middle whenever he gets up he says Kaikeyi You are doing wrong take away your promises but She didn’t agree. Then the next day Ram Comes there and Kaikeyi tells the complete story to him. He says okay I will go to the forest. But Lakshmana and Sita said they will come with him. So they three went to the forest. But in the middle King Dashrath died so Bharat was called immediately to Ayodhya. So when he came and everyone said him story what happened. So he took the whole army with him to bring Rama back. But Ram didn’t come. So everyone except Ram,Lakshman and Sita went back to Ayodhya. After 10 years Srupnakha (Ravan’s sister) Was roaming and she saw Ram and fell in love with him. SoShe went down to him to ask him to marry her but Ram disagreed and sent her to Laxman. But he also disagreed so she became angry and wanted to kill Sit but Laxman came in The middle and cut down her nose and ears. She cried and went to her brother Ravan and said him the full story. He became very angry and went to his uncle Marich And said him what has happened with her sister. And Ravana set you become the golden deer and go in front of Sita so Marich changed his body into a golden deer and went in front of Sita Sita wanted that golden deer so she said to her husband Ram to go and bring it for her. So Ram said to Laxman do not leave Sita alone because he was going to take the golden deer for Sita. But Sita heard The sound of Ram calling Laxman for help so Sita was very scared and said Laxman go and help your brother he’s calling you but Laxman said no my big brother said me not to leave you alone. But Sita said don’t worry about me you go and help your brother and come as soon as possible so Laxman said okay but he drawn a line Around the whole house named Laxman Rekha and said her not to cross this line. So Lakshman went in search of RAM. So in the middle Ravan came As a Rishi and asked Sita for some food, so Sita went inside and bought some food for him.He said Sita to come out of her house and give it to him. So Sita came out of the house as she came out of the house Ravan came in his real look And took away seater with him. Rama and Lakshmana searched everywhere for Sita but they couldn’t find her. So on the way there this saw Hanuman. Hanuman took Ram and Lakshman to the king of monkeys king Sugreev. When Ram and Lakshman reached to King Sugreev Ram did friendship with him. King Sugreev showed ram the jewellery. Rama recognised it is Sita’s jewellery. King Sugreev promised that he will help Rama and Lakshmana to get Sita back. So King Sugreev,Ram, Lakshman, Hanuman and other monkeys came near the Indian Ocean. When they reached there they saw some monsters coming near them he was Ravan’s small brother Vibhishana, Ram and Vibhishana became friends. Nal and Neil throw the stones in the ocean they will not sink they will float on the water so they throw stones on the river and made a bridge across India and Sri Lanka. Everyone crossed the bridge and reached Lanka. They warned Ravan To give Back Sita Or there will be war. But Ravan did not give Sita back to Ram. So Ram Became angry and gave permission to start the war. Ram and Lakshman killed some sons of Ravan. Then small brother of Ravana but big brother of Vibhishana , Kumbhkaran came but Ram killed him. Then Ravana’s biggest son Indrajit came and killed Laxman, but Laxman was not completely killed only if he eats Sanjivani Mantra he can again be alive. So Hanuman Road Drona Giri mountain and search Sanjivani Mantra and gave it to Laxman and he became again alive. And the next day Laxman killed Indrajith. And then Ravan himself came but Rama killed him. Till then 14 years were done. So Sita, Rama and Lakshmana went back to Ayodhya. As soon as they came Bharat made Rama and Sita the king and a queen.
Astha Kumari
VI-C

                 - Sudha Murty
One night 🌙 when her Ajji (grandmother) told her a story about a stepwell that was in their village and now it has disappeared. She was fascinated about the story and she had heard different versions of this story and when she enquired about this every one said that it was a just a folk tale. But one fine day when Nooni and friends went to a picnic in the nearby jungle, accidentally Nooni's leg went in a poodle of mud. When they removed the mud they were surprised to find the a pillar of the same stepwell that they have always heard about. When the villagers came to know about this. The historiams were called and the stepwell was excavated. After the excavation of the stepwell they came to know that the stepwell was hidden in the mud by the king 🤴 who ruled over the Karnataka, to keep the stepwell safe from the invaders. The stepwell was very beautiful. The water 💧 of the stepwell was considered as eternal and sweet. The cow's mouth was unblocked the water started to flow and filled the the stepwell. To learn more about the adventure you can approach the book and read it. Hope you will enjoy.

By Gouri Sreekanth
X C

Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief - Rick Riordan

"Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief" is an excellent novel which is written by Rick Riordan. The book gives us a deep insight of the mythological significance through an absolutely captivating story telling method. The book was actually written by the author for his son but it turned out to be one of the greatest classic mythological novel of all time. This book is published by Puffin books and is the start of the series.
The story deals with a twelve year old boy named Percy Jackson living in New York with his mom. He was leading a normal life until one day suddenly he and his mom were attacked by mysterious and dangerous creatures while driving from school to home. He later learns that he is not a normal human but son of a god. He is like half human half god( or demigod) . He later joins Camp Half-Blood where he meet several other kids who are same like him. He eventually learns that he is the son of Poseidon, the Greek god of water and this camp was supposed to provide education and save people like him from dangerous situations like he experienced.
As the story progresses , we learn that the thunderbolt of Zeus is stolen and he accuses Poseidon of stealing his weapon. But Poseidon denies it and they declare a war due to it. So Percy embarks on a mission to find the thunderbolt and to stop the great war. He joins with his friends Groovy who's a Chiron and Annabeth Chase who is a demigod herself and is the daughter of Athena, god of wisdom. The encounter various problem like facing Medusa, Hydra in Athena's temple and Ares, the god of war himself.
There are a number of reasons why this book became one of my favourite.
One of the things Riordan nailed is, he took the aspects of the ancient mythology and modern day and combined it together . Some of the instances are using a selfie cam to defeat Medusa ,as direct contact to her eyes could turn anyone into a stone. Five to Six security guards becoming the heads of hydra at the Temple of Athena and the 600th floor of Empire State Building being the peak of Mount Olympus. The character development of all the character are on another level. If we just look at the case of Percy he went from a normal ordinary kid to more like a mature person with great skills in combat. Overall, this book is a masterpiece and one of a kind by Rick Riordan and I request all of you guys to just read it once.

ADWAI.S.NAMBIAR
VI C

"My Name is Stilton , Geronimo Stilton" is a children's fiction book written by Elisabetta Dami . This book is about a mouse named Geronimo Stilton , who hires an assistant to work for him at The Rodent's Gazette . Her name is Pinky Pick . It tells the story of how she got hired and the adventures they embark upon . For example , Geronimo was unsure about Pinky because she was so young but he decided to hire her when she got an interview with Fuzzy Fuzzborn , a famous , cranky rock singer . This book uses amazing illustrations , language , characters , plot , and color . The illustrations are my favorite part of this series . There is an illustration on almost every other page . Some whole illustrations take up the page but most are just little ones in the background of the words . I also love the word play that the author uses . On many adjectives , the author will use a different size , font , and color to make it pop . For example , whenever Pinky Pick is talked to or about her name is in big and bright pink letters. Another example , is the word paw . it is written in little paw prints 🐾 . The characters are all mice since they live in New Mouse City . Every character is individualized and created with their own personality . Geronimo is a plain and quiet mouse while Pinky is very loud and exuberant . The plot of every book in this series is different but they all have very interesting plots for children . The whole book is very colorful with the words and illustrations . All of his books are amazing and adventures .
                                                                                                 - Meghna N

                                 VII C

Ralph Ellison’s The Invisible Man

An extremely powerful story of a young Southern Negro, from his late high school days through three years of college to his life in Harlem. His early training prepared him for a life of humility before white men, but through injustices- large and small, he came to realize that he was an "invisible man". People saw in him only a reflection of their preconceived ideas of what he was, denied his individuality, and ultimately did not see him at all. This theme, which has implications far beyond the obvious racial parallel, is skillfully handled. The incidents of the story are wholly absorbing. The boy's dismissal from college because of an innocent mistake, his shocked reaction to the anonymity of the North and Harlem, his nightmare experiences on a one-day job in a paint factory and the hospital, his lightning success as the Harlem leader of a communistic organization known as the Brotherhood, his involvement in black versus white and black versus black clashes and his disillusion and understanding of his invisibility- all climax naturally in scenes of violence and riot, followed by a retreat which is both literal and figurative. Parts of this experience may have been told before, but never with such freshness, intensity, and power.
               By : Diya B Warrier
9c

John Connell’s book begins in the middle of the night during one of the wettest winters on record. He is delivering a calf by himself for the first time: “There is blood on my arms and face, but it is a pleasing blood, the blood of life.” It’s a moment of responsibility when Connell needs to prove to himself and his father that he is capable of managing the farm his family has owned for 30 years. The delivery is successful – “he is a fine wee bull” – and Connell passes the test: “Manhood is an important thing in this land. Farming gives us our sense of it, our understanding of ourselves.”This is a brooding, powerful memoir about a 29-year-old man’s return to the family farm in Ireland and his difficult relationship with his taciturn and short-tempered father. Fleeing his past – a broken relationship in Canada, two aborted careers – and recovering from depression, Connell works on the farm in exchange “for a roof over my head” while he tries to start a novel. He writes movingly of the people he grew up with, his family’s long history in the area and local Celtic myths: “Everything in this country has a story. Everything is rich with meaning.” As a boy, he recalls watching his father and his uncle’s farm, “as poets of the field, bards of the land”. He still remembers with fondness their first cows, “as a city man might remember a departed pet dog”.Connell’s memoir also charts our long relationship with cattle, our companions for some 10,000 years: “To speak of cattle is to speak of man.” But the strength and originality of this book clearly lies in Connell’s searingly honest account of rebuilding his life. Returning to the land of his birth plays a big role in that: “In this farm, I have found my Walden, my sustenance. I walk its fields and know I am alive.” But his irascible father doesn’t understand and in a fiery argument he calls his son “a failure” and tells him “I don’t need you”. This brutal scene spurs Connell to write not the novel he intended, but this age-old story of father and son, struggling with nature and with feelings buried too deep for words. As Connell says, they are like “two bulls in the field sizing each other up”.

Nancy Drew series is a collection of mystery books, written under the pen name Carolyn Keene. PASSWORD TO LARKSPUR LANE is the tenth volume of this series.

The story opens with Nancy tending to her larkspur when a mysterious carrier pigeon lands in her yard. Nancy contacts the International Federation of American Homing Pigeon Fanciers for the registry of the pigeon. Meanwhile, the housekeeper Hannah Gruen has a fall and needs to be taken to the doctor. Her physician Dr. Spire, confides to Carson Drew, Nancy’s father and Nancy that he was forced to tend to an elderly woman for her shoulder under peculiar circumstances. He said that the driver of the car, who took him to the elderly lady, blindfolded him when they drove him there, so that he would not realize her location. But the doctor believed that it was a place called Larkspur Lane. The behavior of the people there and the nervousness of the elderly lady made him believe that she was kept as a prisoner there. The doctor then hands over a bracelet to Nancy, that was given to him by the elderly woman. The only clue to the lady’s identity is the bracelet. And as her natural instinct, Nancy sets out to solve the mystery. Meanwhile, the registry of the pigeon reveals that the pigeon is not a registered one and may include criminals behind it.

She later discovers that the bracelet belongs to the Eldridge family. In the middle, a woman tries to snatch the bracelet from Nancy, but Nancy is able to resist the woman and retains the bracelet back. Due to increasing threats and attacks, Nancy and her father retreats and accepts Helen Corning’s invitation to Sylvan Lake to solve a mystery at her grandparent’s house, while Effie Schneider looks after Hannah at the Drew household. Coincidently, she saves a child from the Eldridge from a mishap in the lake. From the child’s family, she learns that an elderly relative is missing from their family. Nancy, with the help of her friends, Bess and George, explore the vicinity and finally find the Larkspur Lane. There she gets to meet Mrs Eldridge, and she confirms Nancy’s suspicion of her being a prisoner there. Later Nancy and Bess enter the Lane with the password of “singing horses”, Nancy dressed as an old woman and Bess as her nurse. There they rescue Mrs. Eldridge and all other elderly people. She realised that the criminals kidnap rich, elderly people and make them to sign over their assets. Then the police arrest the criminals with Nancy’s help.

By Sreenidhi S Kumar
IX B

One of the most beautiful and emotional story I have ever read. The Little Prince was written by the french author Antoine De Saint Exupery. Saint Exupery wrote this book during world war II, after the German invasion of france forced him to give up aviation and flee to newyork. The novel childhood nostalgia indicate Saint Exupery homesick to return to france. In The Little Prince we see a lovely bond creating between the prince and the author. I really loved the prince's character mysterious, curious and appreciation towards Little things. I also loved the part where the prince was slowly telling about the things in his planet and how he saw different types of grown ups on his journey. This story perfectly portrays love, loss loneliness and friendship. It was also very emotional at the end when the prince have to leave especially the author's line 'incase you travel Africa and you come upon this spot, wait for a time exactly under the star. Then if a little man appears who laughs, who has golden hair and who refuses to answer questions please comfort me. Send me word that he has came back' I remember tears were dropping down my face!. I think this book is my favourite now.

Anjali Ramesh
9th A

In the linked essays that make up her debut collection, This Is One Way to Dance, Sejal Shah explores culture, language, family, and place. Throughout the collection, Shah reflects on what it means to make oneself visible and legible through writing in a country that struggles with race and maps her identity as an American, South Asian American, writer of color, and feminist. This Is One Way to Dance draws on Shah's ongoing interests in ethnicity and place: the geographic and cultural distances between people, both real and imagined. Her memoir in essays emerges as Shah wrestles with her experiences growing up and living in western New York, an area of stark racial and economic segregation, as the daughter of Gujarati immigrants from India and Kenya. These essays also trace her movement over twenty years from student to teacher and meditate on her travels and life in New England, New York City, and the Midwest, as she considers what it means to be of a place or from a place, to be foreign or familiar.

Shah invites us to consider writing as a somatic practice, a composition of digressions, repetitions-movement as transformation, incantation. Her essays-some narrative, others lyrical and poetic-explore how we are all marked by culture, gender, and race; by the limits of our bodies, by our losses and regrets, by who and what we love, by our ambivalences, and by trauma and silence. Language fractures in its attempt to be spoken. Shah asks and attempts to answer the question: How do you move in such a way that loss does not limit you? This Is One Way to Dance introduces a vital new voice to the conversation about race and belonging in America.

                                       BY - ARYAN.G
CLASS -8B

This is a collection of wonderfully short, crisp stories from the time of our ancestors that take us on a magical journey to a land of gods, demigods, asuras, rakshasas, handsome valiant princes, beautiful, strong-willed princesses, learned sages, proud kings and a lot more! These stories talk of the holy Trinity in Hindu Mythology – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. And while they are all about gods and goddesses and princes and kings, their ancientness ends right there. These stories are as much relevant today as they were in the earlier times.

As an English teacher and lecturer at Albert Mission College, Krishna has led a mundane and monotonous lifestyle comparable to that of a cow. But he also plays an important role in protecting Indian culture. His life changes when his wife, Susila, and their child, Leela, come to live with him. With their welfare on his hands, Krishna learns to be a proper husband and learns how to accept the responsibility of taking care of his family. He feels that his life has comparatively improved, as he understands that there's more meaning to life than to just teaching. However, when they search for a new house, Susila contracts typhoid after visiting a dirty lavatory, keeping her in bed for weeks. Throughout the entire course of her illness, Krishna constantly tries to keep an optimistic view. However, Susila eventually passes away. Krishna, destroyed by her loss, has suicidal thoughts but gives them up for the sake of his daughter, Leela. He is lost and miserable after her death, but he receives a letter from a stranger who indicates that Susila has been in contact with him and that she wants to communicate with Krishna. This makes him more collected and cheerful, leading to a journey in search of enlightenment, with the stranger acting as a medium to Susila in the spiritual world. Leela, on the other hand, goes to a preschool where Krishna gets to meet the headmaster, a profound man who cares for the students in his school and teaches them moral values through his own methods. The Headmaster puts his students as his top priority but he does not care for his own family and children, eventually leaving them on the day predicted by an astrologer as the day of his death, which did not come true. Krishna is influenced by the headmaster, eventually learning to 'communicate' with Susila on his own, thus concluding the entire story with the quote that he felt 'a moment of rare immutable joy'.

Aarsha Darsan SS
X A

The book is subtitled Being further letters to his daughter, written in prison.
The letters on history are sprinkled with contemporary and personal events, things that happened to himself or his friends, colleagues or family members. At times the style is that of an intimate conversation with his daughter, who is at Anand Bhavan, in which he also anticipates her reactions and the feelings she might have when reading it. At other times he "provided a profoundly philosophical interpretation of world history. Some letters are written on a daily basis and some have gaps in between of weeks and even months

Vaishnavi.PS
9c

Mowgli, the boy, grows up with the animals. He learns the law of the jungle from Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther is his protector. But Shere Khan, the strongest of the hunters, as well as the most alone, is biding his time until he can get the prey that he thinks is rightfully his.
PERCY JACKSON AND THE SEA OF MONSTERS

The Sea of Monsters is an American fantasy-adventure novel based on Greek mythology written by Rick Riordan and published in 2006. It is the second novel in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series and the sequel to The Lightning Thief. The main character of the book is Percy Jackson. The heroic son of Poseidon Percy Jackson makes an action-packed comeback in the second must-read installment of Rick Riordan’s amazing young readers series. Starring Percy Jackson, a “half-blood” whose mother is human and whose father is the Greek God of the Seas. Now Percy lives at Camp Half-Blood, with other Demigods, but Camp Half-Blood is a bit different from most summer camps. Instead of playing around and having fun, these demigods put their lives at risk every day. Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: the magical borders which protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters. To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner by the Cyclops Polyphemus on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters, the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millennia. Now Percy and his friends-Grover, Annabeth, daughter of Athena the Goddess of wisdom, must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclopes by the end of the summer or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed.

With humor, intelligence, and expert pacing, the author uses this tale of believable teens and their high-stakes struggle to bring the mythical lore up to date (e.g., Hermes god of travel and communication, appropriately, invented the Internet). A cliffhanger imparts new meaning to the prophecy (mentioned in the first book) and leaves no question that Percy’s high-stakes battle for Western Civilization will continue to surprise even himself. Rick Riordan catches readers up seamlessly on this world in which gods still reign; he builds on existing subplots and rivalries and introduces harrowing new challenges as Percy and Annabeth set off across the Sea of Monsters on a quest to find the Golden Fleece.

I loved this book. The book has a creative and suspenseful storyline and attaching characters, like the prequel, “The Lighting Thief”. This book is really good, I highly recommend this book for all ages. It is a fun book to read and the messages are fantastic. On the other side, I recommend having read the first book before this one because it will make more sense, a better understanding, and lots of emotion. The whole concept gives kids a fun introduction to Greek mythology while still making an exciting story. This book will make even the most anti readers interested in reading.

All in all, in my view this book is a must-read for anyone that enjoys fantasy with mythology. This book is also an amazing book for beginning readers.

BY ARJUN S.M,

CLASS IX A

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle

The stories happen in the nineteenth century, and the author is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This has to be the most adventurous detective book I’ve had the pleasure of reading. Events occur in London city and it is noteworthy that the main hero fight against crime and injustice in difficult conditions. The main character, who is a detective, lives with his friend Dr. Watson. In addition, during their many adventures, he defeats all his l enemies and lives his life boring. Consequently, repeatedly he searches for puzzles and crimes. Though when these attempts he feels enjoyed and thrilled, he is judged to remain alone, acknowledging his fate. The thing that impressed me the most about this book was that Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Sherlock Holmes” never gave up and always lived with hope. As you read this book, you feel negative emotions such as fear, and grief in yourself. I realized from this book that I had to courageously overcome all obstacles, constantly moving forward without ever giving up.

I would strongly recommend this book to people who are prone to reading such detective novels and surprising endings.

Mohana SN
X 'A'

Five students walk into detention one day, but only four make it out alive.
One of Us is Lying follows the gripping story of Bronwyn, Addy, Nate, and Cooper as suspects in the murder of Simon Kelleher. Each of the high school students has secrets that they would do anything to protect, so how far would they go to make sure they’re kept out of the spotlight?
I liked this book because it delved into the personalities and thoughts of each individual suspect to keep the reader guessing who did it until the very end. Overall, One of Us is Lying is a surprising and engaging book that was hard to put down. I especially liked how each perspective of the characters was described in depth so that the audience was not left out of the storytelling. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves murder mysteries and young adult fiction.
One of Us is Lying is a teenage take on themes as dark as murder and depression, and although other writers are unsuccessful in developing such deep plots for a younger audience, Karen M. McManus writes with an enjoyable voice that establishes her story very effectively that, additionally, is targeted well toward a young adult audience. So, if you’re wanting to sit down and unravel a complex and grounded mystery, you should check out One of Us is Lying.

WAR AND PEACE by Leo Tolstoy

War and peace is an epic novel, but also an encyclopedia of the life of Russian people in the 19th century. In the center of the story are two male antipodes : Count Pierre Bezukhov and Prince Andrei Bolkonsky. The image of Pierre Bezukhov can be attributed to dreamers who want the best, but who do not succeed at all as they would like. Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, on the other hand, acts as an ideal Russian soldier, son and husband, a skillful owner. Absolutely dissimilar, at first glance, the images still have something in common they both are looking for real themselves, both in search of true happiness. Natasha Rostova becomes the central female character of the novel. We are introduced to her at a very young age, and she grows up before our eyes. In the course of events of the novel, the main character also grows, turning from a young, slightly naive girl into a loving wife and mother. This book is not just about war, not about peace, it is, first of all, about people. War and Peace is book for everyone. It is about a change in consciousness, about the search for being and the search for ourselves.

Arathy Ajith
X C

One of the best works of Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist is not only philosophy, but a good philosophy at that. It tells us that life is not about the consequences; it is about the journey. It narrates the story of a voyage encompassing two continents – a journey that transforms the thinking and perceptions of the traveler, Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd. He keeps getting the same dream about the treasures lying in the Pyramids of Egypt. The book details his journey and the various experiences he has while following his dream. Throughout his journey, Santiago encounters a lot of new people and many problems, which ultimately help him to learn and grow.

B Nityaprakash
X C

This book is a good piece of work by Vamsi Krishna about Draupadi’s character from Mahabharata. Everyone is aware of the Pandavas struggle from the epic Mahabharata but nobody has given attention towards the struggle of Draupadi in all such events that happened in her life.

This book describes the hardship of women because of the series of unusual events that happened in her life. The author has given his utmost attention to Draupadi’s character as a strong woman who never gave up on her family no matter whatever went wrong.

This book is worth a read, it gives you a slightly different perspective about Mahabharata.

“She adores and voluntarily serves herself with pride to the man who sees her beauty through her eyes and finds the way to her heart.
The Kingdom of Back - Marie Lu

Maria Anna Mozart was the older sister of the so-called 'prodigious' Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the musician who was known all over Europe and the world for his musical compositions. She was bom on 30 July 1751. Everyone knows about Wolfgang but very little do they know about his beloved sister Marianna or Nanneri as she was called lovingly. She was a prodigy herself and always went with Wolfgang to perform until the societal prejudices allowed her to. She was asked to stay home and not go with her brother once she was of marriagable age. Still, the letters sent between her and her brother remain and in many of them, her brother appreciates her for her brilliant compositions and asks to send "more". It could refer to only one thing.. that Nannerl used to send her compositions to her little brother and he used to publish it with his signature. Marie Lu found another tiny detail in those letters.. it was the mention of the Kingdom of Back they invented to pass time during their long journeys.

The book The Kingdom of Back is a historical fiction/ fantasy fiction Marie Lu wrote to let the huge world know about Nannerl and what her life would have been like. Nanner and Wolfgang were each other's only best friends in this large and unfair world. In this book, the Kingdom of Back is a real world for those siblings. It was a world of mysteries the siblings kept to themselves. For Nannerl, it all started with a wish, a wish that pleaded for her not to be forgotten. She was afraid of it. Since that day, her lovely so-called guardian Hyacinth would come and visit her. He promised to fulfill her wish for three tasks. Though the story takes a turn and gives way to fantasies and imagination, the one thing that's clear is that she wants to be remembered, and not lay forgotten. The book portrays her insecurities and her reality that was filled with irrefutable prejudices for just the fact that she was bom a woman...

I love this book, not because of its wild fantasies, but because of Nannerl, the woman who could have made her wish come true if bom two centuries later. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to give wings to the young Nanneris of today. This book is available in our school library...

Shivendu J
IX C

This book is written by Rabindranath Tagore who also composed our national anthem. The main characters of the story are Rabindranath Tagore , his 5 year old daughter Mini and a pedestrian Kabuliwala.
The author was always busy with his work. He used to say to Mini that Kabuliwala would kidnap her if behaved badly. One day when Mini was looking out of the window , she saw Kabuliwala wearing a turban and carrying raisins and dates. Mini called out Kabuliwala .He stopped and gave Mini some raisins and dates for free. Days passed, he and Mini became friends . Kabuliwala would not take money from her at all. Once when the author asked him why he gave the dates and raisins for free , he replied that he has a daughter of Mini's age and Mini reminded him of his daughter. So he did not want to take money from her . One day when Kabuliwala decided to return to Kabul ,he lent his fruits to some people . When he returned he collected the money for the fruits from the borrowers but one man refused to give the money and started fighting with him. Kabuliwala took a knife a injured him a little . After the incident happened the police came and arrested Kabuliwala. On his way to jail Mini asked him if he was going to jail and he replies yes. After 10 years Mini was been married and on the day of marriage Kabuliwala was released. He went to her house carrying raisins and dates thinking that she still was a 5 year old . When he went to her house he saw that the house was decorated and people were celebrating something. So he asked the guards what they were celebrating and the replied it was Mini's marriage . When he heard it was her marriage he remembered his daughter . He asked whether he could see her but they refuse to do so. The author heard this and took him inside to meet Mini. When he met Mini he gave the raisins and dates . When the author took it he saw a small black coloured hand mark. He asked what it was and he replies tha it was his daughter's hand mark and the only memory of her for him. Hearing this the author gave Kabuliwala money to return to Kabul from the money he had saved for Mini's marriage.
The story was very heart touching .The story was a good example of moral value . This story is also based on some part of his life.

ADWAI.S.NAMBIAR
VIII C

The Cherry Tree by Ruskin Bond is a very nice story promoting the importance of nature through a cute boy Rakesh, aged six. Rakesh lives with his grandfather in a small town of Mussoorie, and there he goes to school every day. For the farming purpose, his parents live in the deeper part of the mountains which is not connected with facilities like school or hospitals, etc.

One day Rakesh buys a bunch of cherries from the market, while eating them, he comes home. When he is left with only three cherries, he thinks about sowing seeds of cherries around his home, since there is barely a fruit tree. In the garden around his home, he throws the seed casually. After rain and winter when the next season of monsoon arrives, by luck he notices the tiny plant of the cherry tree. Thereafter, he grows fond of that tree; however, he remains obsessed with its height. He wants it to grow very fast. When he sees that the tree is not growing fast like he thought, he abandons it, thinking it a waste of time.

Again in the next monsoon he discovers the tree and then jumps up with excitement upon finding it as tall as him. After that both grandfather and he begin taking care of the tree. They save the tree from a goat that eats up the stem leaves and then from a grass-cutter woman who almost cut it into two pieces.

By the time Rakesh is nine years old, the tree grows up like a matured one. He notices the caterpillar and other insects wounding up and down the branches. After a few months, grandfather puts his cot underneath it to relax in the day under its shade. Rakesh is bemused on his deeds that he cannot believe that he can reap the fruits of a tree planted by him.

In Ruskin Bond books, nature has always been a persistence theme. He is of the opinion that the nature of the hills should be saved and encouraged. People should not destroy it for commercialization or personal motifs. The language of the book is simple yet engrossing. It is a perfect book for primary class students.

"Before the coffee gets cold" is a beautifully themed novel by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, originally began as a play before being adapted into a novel in 2015 and released in 2017. Translated by Geoffrey Trousselot

The novel itself is divided into four parts, each of them about a character, each different but connected, each of them going through a difficult time.

The story revolves around a charming old Japanese cafe, subject to urban legends and rumours; they say it could take you back in time.
But ofcourse, there's a catch, or rather multiple:
1. Nothing you do in the past will ever change the present.
•The first rule itself was what made most people change their tunes; what was the point of changing the past if it didn't change the future?
2. You cannot leave the seat.
•The key to go to the past was a chair at the farthest corner, where a ghost lady sat. This eerie lady could not only be touched but also could curse you as the the protagonist in the first part finds out when she tries to remove the ghost lady from her seat. Of course, you can only sit on the chair if the ghost lady is not already sitting. The only time you get to sit is when the ghost lady moves to visit the toilet, which happens once a day.
3. You can only meet the people who have been in the cafe at that time.
4. Your journey begins when the coffee is poured and you MUST return before it gets cold, or something terrible happens to you.

It was simple, heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. It was just the theme that attracted me when my friend suggested this book for the review; a hundred year old cafe that could take you back in time, the journey that begans when a cup of coffee is poured and must end before the coffee gets cold and ofcourse, the mysterious ghost lady who let the cup go cold. But with with every page I turned, I found myself satisfied in a way only a good book could. The book wasn't perfect, yet it was.

"Just remember. Drink the coffee before it goes cold," she whispered."

CHANDANA S S
XA

Balram Halwai is a reflection of many Indian servants who wished they could break the The white tiger by arvind adiga"-The white tiger", a nickname given to Balram for his quickness and intellect during his childhood. The desire to be a servant, as said by Balram has been hammered into his skull. Adiga has skillfully explained the differences between the privileged and the underprivileged in India, by dividing India into India of light and India of darkness. Balram is a good and honest servant whose only duty is please his master but he also never suppresses his individuality. He respects his master but still allows himself to recognize his master's flaws. Balram was described by his family and his teachers as "different". His father believed that he should read and write and have a proper education which does not happen due to unfortunate circumstances. Balram could read but he could not understand what he has read. Throughout this book, we feel Balram understanding and digesting the fact that he deserves respect. We can see the servant in him fighting with the individual in him.Adiga uses a very clever analogy in the form of the rooster coup. He compares the people in India of darkness to a rooster coup crowded, all animals of the same species, with the same mindset and desires, who are eventually going to be slaughtered. Balram, true to his nickname, proud to be a white tiger among the roosters as he puts aside the sentimental servant in him and slits his master's throat. Balram made an entrepreneur and a man of himself after stealing his landlord's money and building himself a future.Presented by:Geethika KS 10-C

A Tiger in the House is a story by the famous author Ruskin Bond. Also, the narrator of the story is Ruskin Bond himself. The story is about a tiger cub, Timothy. One day, when the author’s grandfather was walking down the forest path along with his party, he found a tiger cub. He decided to bring that cub home. It was named Timothy by his grandmother and was brought up on bottle-milk. As Timothy grew, he was fed raw mutton, cod liver oil, pigeons, and rabbits also.
When Timothy was a cub, he was friends with Toto, the monkey, and a puppy. Timothy was initially afraid of the puppy but later on, he became friends with the puppy and allowed him to rest on his back. The author became Timothy’s favourite when he came to live with his grandparents. He would be all around the author and would pretend to bite his ankles.
Timothy would sleep in the cook’s quarters. When he became six months old, he became less friendly. He ate small animals, sometimes pulled his chain hard, and also snarled at everybody. However, he had clean habits and scrubbed his face with his paws like a cat.
As he grew, he became dangerous and thus the grandfather decided to take him to the zoo at Lucknow. He took Timothy in a first-class compartment. After six months grandfather visited Timothy in the zoo. He patted the tiger’s forehead, prickled his ears and whacked his mouth. The tiger started to lick his hands but sprang away when a leopard in the neighbouring cage snarled at him. Seeing this the grandfather decided to meet the superintendent and request him to transfer Timothy to another cage. But, he was unlucky and could not meet him.
He went to the tiger’s cage disappointed to bid him goodbye. Once again he patted the tiger. A keeper recognised the grandfather and told him that Timothy died of pneumonia. He also told him that this tiger was trapped only last month and is very dangerous. The grandfather’s arm was still in the cage and the tiger was licking it. He somehow withdrew his arm from the cage. He gave a disrespectful look to the keeper and bid the tiger ‘Goodnight’.
The story teaches us that the basic nature or traits of a person do not change irrespective of the environment in which he lives.

𝘿𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙠𝙖 𝘼𝙍
𝙓 𝘼
