The first thing we discussed is providing a bit of personal background on who we are outside the classroom for the students. If we want to know more about them, it is likely much easier if we reveal some personal information about ourselves first.

We will be using individually crafted "All about you" forms to gather the standard information.

In addition, we will be combining a "Scientists Like Me" project with a conversation to collect more information and build relationships with our students early in the course.

In junior grades, an early phone call home is often very insightful into who our students are.

We discussed the google form as a starting point as an initial "meet and greet" in our classes. We would like to update this throughout the semester as students become more comfortable in our classrooms so we can learn more about the students.
Have the students create a google site with the homepage being all about them. The students create a video introducing themselves, how to pronounce their name correctly, share their passions - this would give students an opportunity to share their creative side. Provide an exemplar for the google site with some information about ourselves, etc.
Have conversations with the students not about our subject. More personal conversations to get a better understanding of their lives and what is happening outside of our classroom.
Talking to parents and their other teachers to find out what strategies work for them and how to best support them.
