If we want to know more about them, it is likely much easier if we reveal some personal information about ourselves first.

We will be using individually crafted "All about you" forms to gather the standard information.

In addition, we will be combining a "Scientists Like Me" project with a conversation to collect more information and build relationships with our students early in the course.

By combining physical movement and a "would you rather" activity, example: run to this side of the gym if you really like physical activity or run to that side of the gym if you prefer video games.

By creating lessons where students are able to choose what activity they can do.

Contact and SST are not just a safe space but a brave space
-Use proactive strategies when dealing with students
-Use restorative practices
-Rooms do not have a label. - space welcomes everyone
-Creating a learning profile for all students that access the rooms to better know our students.  Will be updated on an ongoing basis
-Both spaces are holistic and have a lot of community access points (ie. Gift Cards for families, Boys and Girls Clubs, etc)
-Provide products and services to students and families. (ie.  Charity for families in need, hygiene products..).
-Ambassadors for students - help find extracurriculars, support with job finding, support with teachers, social work support, and whatever the need is, we will find it.

Send out a request through the VLE asking students to talk about themselves.  What do you want the teacher know about you, are there any factors that may affect your progress in this class, any difficulties yo face. It will be like classwork so only the teacher can see the responses

Focus on the human relationship (don't be remote to the student)

We sometimes use clips form movies to display humanity like Pursuit of Happiness or struggles faced by students from poorer nations 

Early in the semester calls to parents to introduce yourselves and talk about the students

Try and connect with a student on at least one thing that is important to them

We would like to update this throughout the semester as students become more comfortable in our classrooms so we can learn more about the students.
Have the students create a google site with the homepage being all about them. The students create a video introducing themselves, how to pronounce their name correctly, share their passions - this would give students an opportunity to share their creative side. Provide an exemplar for the google site with some information about ourselves, etc. 
Have conversations with the students not about our subject. More personal conversations to get a better understanding of their lives and what is happening outside of our classroom.
Talking to parents and their other teachers to find out what strategies work for them and how to best support them.

“Getting to know you” questionnaires to allow students to share info such as their pronouns, learning styles, strengths, tech situation, interests, etc.

The vast majority of this is done informally by talking to students on a regular basis, and emphasizing well-being and relationships over curriculum

Conferencing with students regularly (through triangulation, in class, by email, etc.)

Intro activities to build community

Finding out: what sort of obstacles/challenges are students facing?

Catch up periods where you spend time speaking with students as they catch up on work they are doing for your/other classes

Asking for student feedback throughout the semester (i.e. what do you want to learn? What activities from class are you enjoying? What would you change about our course?)
