In pictures and poems, Hera was portrayed as beautiful and majestic. However, in reality, she was very envious and vengeful toward any woman who showed interest in her husband Hercules. Some accounts reveal that Hera would punish and torture any woman taking part in a romance with her husband no matter the circumstance, but would still remain loyal to him. Before her marriage with Zeus, she was the ruler over the heavens and Earth.

Hera is the stepmother and enemy of Hercules. When Alcmene was pregnant with Zeus' child Heracles, Hera tried to prevent the birth from occurring by having Eileithyia tie Alcmene's legs in knots. Her attempt was stopped when Galanthis scared Eileithyia while she was tying her legs and Heracles was born. Hera punishes Galanthis by making her a weasel. When Hercules was an infant Hera sent serpents to kill him but he grabbed the serpents with his bare hands and killed them, then he played with them as a toy. As an adult Hera drove him mad and Hercules ended up killing his whole family. Some myths state that in the end, Heracles befriended Hera by saving her from Porphyrion, a giant who tried to rape her. After this Hera gave her daughter Hebe as Hercules bride.

Zeus had an affair with Leto, and when Hera found out she convinced the nature spirits to prohibit Leto from giving birth on land, island, and sea. Poseidon felt bad for Leto so he lead her to the floating island of Delos to give birth to her children. Hera kidnapped Eiliethyia, the goddess of childbirth, to further prevent her from giving birth. Eventually she was bribed by the other gods with a necklace and gave in. Artemis was born first and then came Apollo

Argument rose between goddesses Hera, and Athena, and Aphrodite during the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. This is because Eris, the goddess of Strife, finds out that she was not invited to the wedding, and therefore tosses a golden apple with the words "to the fairest" written on it. The three goddesses argue over the possession of the apple, each claiming that they are the fairest of them all. The decision was put in the hands of Paris, a Trojan prince, who eventually picked Aphrodite.
