This satire clearly mocks presidents and how they take credit for things they have nothing to do with. This mockery is clear from how the satirists are claiming that presidents are taking credit for the tides, which are forces of nature. Additionally, this satire packs in a snarky comment that exposes how presidents and politicians in general only take credit when it suits them.

This satire is employed with a purpose of evoking social reflection. By pointing out how president's illogically claim credit for happenings which they have nothing to do with, the satirists cause viewers to reflect on this issue. This satire also encourages viewers to stop sheepishly believing politicians' claims by using humor and pointing out how ridiculous some claims to credit can be.

The satire in this video mocks how presidents take credit for events "when it suits them", even though the president did not do much or anything towards the event. In the video, the Onion says that presidents take credit for the tides, even though it is impossible to have control over them. The Onion also says how presidents take credit "when it suits them", meaning that the presidents can choose to act like they were not responsible for events just as often as they act like they are responsible.

The purpose of the satire was to make the issue of political lies/false claims more apparent. The outlandishly false claim in the video that presidents take credit for a natural occurrence brings the attention to the viewer to pay more attention to other events presidents may be falsely taking credit for.
