Sometimes, a child may just be too difficult to handle. Most teens and pre-teens tend to act out around the ages of 13 to 18. These kids will start drinking and acting out around these ages. In order to avoid this, the parents want a way out.

The act of unwinding a child is just a selfish way out for the parents.

I'm going to go through the characters who are supposed to be unwound and explain why their parents decided to do so.

Connor's parents are sick and tired of how impulsive and improper attitude. Connor decides to runaway with his girlfriend, Ariana, however, she backs out last minute.

Risa, an orphan, is being unwound due to overcrowding in her home. She ends up running away when her bus taking her to be unwound crashes. This is how she meets Connor, where they continue to run together.

Lev is a tithe, which is people are chosen to be unwound as an honorary action. Although he was totally okay with doing this, he ended up being taken by Risa and Connor, which angers him.

A lot of the kids feel that their parents have betrayed them by allowing the government to claim them as theirs. The following quote really puts emotion behind the unwinds.

"You want to believe that there's one relationship in life that's beyond betrayal. A relationship that's beyond that kind of hurt. And there isn't." -Caleb Carr

"The Bill of Life was supposed to protect the sanctity of life. Instead it just made life cheap." (2.9.5)

This quote shows the morality behind why unwinding is murder and wrong. They wanted to protect unborn children from abortions, however, all they did was make life seem worthless after 13.

Reason #1: Fear Causes Worse Behavior

Another argument for why unwinding is not just is that it can cause worse behavior. An example of this is on page 56 when Connor and Risa plot to change their clothes in order to avoid the law. Risa decides to scam a woman into giving her clothes, which Connor then states that it's better than his idea to just steal clothes. Lev then says that scamming is stealing. This is an example of how this fear of being unwound causes worse irrational behavior.

Reason #4: Unconstitutional

The idea of unwinding itself is unconstitutional. This is because once your parents sign off that you are to be unwound, you're government property. This is unconstitutional because the 9th amendment gives the power to the people. The entire country was built off of the people having a voice, therefore, unwinding is not only morally wrong, but constitutionally wrong.
