Connor's parents are sick and tired of how impulsive and improper attitude. Connor decides to runaway with his girlfriend, Ariana, however, she backs out last minute.

Risa, an orphan, is being unwound due to overcrowding in her home. She ends up running away when her bus taking her to be unwound crashes. This is how she meets Connor, where they continue to run together.

Lev is a tithe, which is people are chosen to be unwound as an honorary action. An example of this is on page 56 when Connor and Risa plot to change their clothes in order to avoid the law. Risa decides to scam a woman into giving her clothes, which Connor then states that it's better than his idea to just steal clothes. Lev then says that scamming is stealing.
