Community Accountability

--Community accountability refers to a strategy used by community members that allows individuals to resolve conflict with their own tactics without a police encounter. This strategy involves individuals who are willing to take matters in their own hands by speaking up and out against crime within their own community. This tactic involves courage and requires members to speak out against conflicts they witness. A key factor that creates a strong community is by getting to know your neighbors. Having a sense of knowledge and trust builds comfort in knowing you can reach out if needed. Often, we hear people say they do not want to get involved and mostly because they do not know the parties involved. With such crime that arises in low-income neighborhoods its necessary to know or have an idea of who you are surrounded by. If communities continue to hold groups such as “neighborhood watches” it can help reduce crime. Often conflicts that are not serious can be resolved by community members that know the individuals personally. Having the police come should be a last result. Particularly in these areas, we see people arrested as a result when there are so many solutions that could have avoided such. It is up to members of the community to actively be involved and look out for one another. A simple greeting to neighbors shows that you acknowledge them and although it may not stop all crime, it can reduce it or cause criminals to have a second thought.</description>
