Netiquette refers to the rules in which people should follow while being professional and appropriate online. When online, miscommunication can happen often due to the lack of facial expressions and body movement being exchanged. Netiquette educates everyone on how to respond online properly. Netiquette is a way of professionally and respectfully sharing knowledge and information within technology. Communicating online has become very popular, however in many instances people can misinterpret another post in a negative way. Keeping comments and opinions appropriate for all viewers is part of proper netiquette.
The Core Rules of Netiquette Intro (1990-2011).

It is easy to misinterpret something we see or read online. We as humans tend to disregard that whoever is on the other side of your computer screen have the same feelings as you do. There are ways in which you can express yourself freely in an effective way without offending someone else online. You must ask yourself, "Would I say this to someone's face?" and remember... EVERYTHING you post online can be used as evidence against you one day.
The Core Rules of Netiquette Rule #1 (1990-2011). This does not mean that you need to correct their grammar, call them out on a question that seems obvious to you, or point out how unnecessarily long their response is.
Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life

Rule 2 of Netiquette, “Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you would follow in real life,” is a question of ethics. While online, you should be asking yourself, “Would I say or do this in reality as well as cyberspace?” By complying with the laws we live by on a day-to-day basis, we are also complying with the laws online. These laws are what are what keep our identities private and safe. Some people believe that what is posted online differs greatly than their real lives; “it can easily be deleted.” Nevertheless, there are always things that can be said, or done online that adversely affect our real lives. For example, posting personal information online such as your full name, street address, personal email, or phone number is the equivalence to leaving your wallet unattended in a public place. You would never leave items regarding your personal information out for strangers to see in real life, so why put this type of information out on the internet? It is dangerous, and not a display of proper Netiquette.
Rule 2 -- The Core Rules of Netiquette -- Excerpted from Netiquette by Virginia Shea. (n.d.).

Practicing netiquette is important because of the comfortable environment created for communication within a group of people. Netiquette also allows for instant access to opinions or comments from various participants. Using proper language eliminates the likelihood of misinterpretations and hurt feelings from occurring. Proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, avoidance of street terms, texting language, and emoticons act as appropriate concepts to keep in consideration when using technology to communicate. In addition to professional posting, being considerate of the opinions of fellow peers and never responding in a disrespectful way should always be kept in mind.
What is netiquette and why is it important in online learning? (2017).
Help keep flame wars under control

"Flame wars" has to do with multiple people arguing or aggressively discussing a particular topic. One person first stating their opinion or knowledge on the given topic, followed up by another individual contributing to the same conversation but by using negative comments often starts "flaming wars." This concept reminds me of a debate, however the responses given in a debate do not present hurtful, inappropriate, or disrespectful words. A helpful way to avoid "flaming wars" leads to the idea of putting oneself in the shoes of someone reading the post. Realizing that misinterpretations could occur may cause the person posting to change up the wording or placement of words.
Initially, this topic appealed to me because of the catchy wording used within the title. "Flaming wars" serves as a catchy title that accurately describes how netiquette can be used in a negative way. A major issue faced in society today connects to social media and how people read comments or posts from different angles. Miscommunication online commonly takes place because face to face contact is not present. Accepting other people's ideas and beliefs serves as a significant value in my mind, which connects to why I chose this specific concept.
Respecting other people's ideas and opinions will create a more comfortable and inviting environment, which leads to why avoiding "flame wars" is so important. Having one's students only post what they would say to another student's face will avoid any discouragement and fear of participation. Using online communication sources can be an effective way to encourage student involvement and possibly create a higher level of understanding. Learning proper netiquette will lead to a greater degree of professionalism and respect for surrounding individuals in a classroom setting or in an occupational setting down the road.
Allen, S.
