Knowing the history of the Caribbean region goes a long way towards understanding its people. Each island has a unique cultural identity shaped by the European colonialists, the African heritage of slaves, and the enduring legacies of the native Indian tribes." The quote above came from an article originated from a Caribya site, which promotes everything Caribbean from music to festivals and even cuisine and arts. This surely reflects a local Trinidadian saying that everyone is mix up like a pot of pelau. Which in retrospect is very true because in my case my family is mixed with East Indian, African and others. My time going to immigration office I always tick the other box because it is the easiest and self-explanatory option because I do not know what group I fall other.

Caribbean music comprices of Reggae, Soca, Calypso, Dancehall, Extempo, Chutney just to name a few. These genres of music all originated in the region of the Caribbean sea from different countries like Jamaica contributing Reggae and Dancehall.Trinidad and Tobago contributing Soca, Calypso and Chutney. These types for music reflects local artist's vision and interpretation of their country and lifestyle. In some aspects artists also uses this platform to basically promote and encourage foreigners all around the world to come and enjoy the great scenarios that their sounds portray. The iconic David Rudder composer "Trini To De Bone", promotes trinidad as a great destination island in the sun and for fun. The sound explains what Trinidad and Tobago has to offer in terms of food ,sweet women, parting. It also explains no matter what race or what region we are from we a all "Trini To De Bone" This song has become and anthem for the country with its catchy lyrics “(Sweet Sweet T & T) Oh how I love up this country (Sweet Sweet T & T) No place in this world I'd rather be.” This shows a great development and identity for the Caribbean people as the musical culture expands and is pushed outside our boarders, encouraging growth for the region. Globalization deals with strong influence of a near-by party. In our Caribbean region our large neighbors such as Latin America and the United States . These regions has a higher population rate, with millions and millions of persons to promote and influence their music. The United States of America being a first world country, it gives them the up hand as they have a strong influence in the region and the world. Due to the great amount of resources and the millions promoting their music such as Pop, Rap, RnB and Latin music. Near-by countries and our Region is heavily influenced by their music and styles of music. Some prefer the foreign music over local style music. This hinders local development and its music and culture as there is no wider market to push local music further. For example The famous song “Despacito” was originated in Latin America and was able to broadcast all across the world, especially the Caribbean region .The influenced local artist of the Caribbean to adapt to this style of music. Machel Montano is an amazing soca artist from Trinidad and Tobago, he promotes the country very well regionally and internationally. After Despacito song broke records globally. He wrote an entire song based off of Latin America influence “Mami Lo Tiene.” This song was obviously straying away from original soca roots and shows that changing the style of music allows artist to be successful by using none local influence. This doesn’t mean that the local music is dying but it is being altered and arranged to be connected with regions that have a strong influence.

Caribbean people are very relaxed and happy persons. This is due to all the great parties(fetes) and festivals that are hosted throw out the year form January straight to the end of December.

“ Trinidad and Tobago is a multicultural and cosmopolitan nation. There are many national, religious and cultural festivals that are celebrated. Some of the festivals include Muslim celebrations of Hosay and Eid-ul-Fitr, the Hindu festivals, Phagwa and Divali , the Christian festivals of Easter and Christmas, the Shouter Baptist, Arrival Day, Liberation Day, Emancipation Day, Independence Day, Republic Day, the Tobago Jazz Festival, the Blue Food Festival and the Tobago Heritage Festival. Carnival, is a grand two day festivity, noted for the colour and splendour of costumes, sweet sounds of calypso and steelpan.” These great festivals are celebrated with local patriates and visited guests. This allows growth and development for respected countries that hosts such events. Due to the continue strong influence of near-by regions, foreign festivals are being adopted on local soils. Trinidad and Tobago was never into the Halloween festivals and activities ,but for some reason it found itself in its “trini” style to it. Halloween in the United States consist of children going aground for candy saying “trick or treat”, houses are decorated into haunted houses or some sort of Halloween themed and Halloween parties is a huge event across their. In Trinidad the only thing we have adapted is the Halloween Party aspect of it. Halloween is not the only festival slowly coming across , Cyber Monday and Black Friday sales are slowly being practiced across the region. This shows how easily people are influenced ,especially when to dominating party advertise strongly in the Caribbean. Trinidad and Tobago for example are provided with North American television coverage. This means all United States related content are being feed to young children’s mine and also adults. This influence and spread their culture onto us. In my family I have two cousins that grow up watching television and to this day as grown as they are, both have American accents even though they grew up in Trinidad and Tobago and around Trinidadians. We as Caribbean people need to understand how heavily their culture are being sprang upon us.

Cuisine is defined as a style of cooking that is influenced by the country and region it originated from and local culture and ingredients. Trinidad and Tobago as said before “is a pot of pelau” as it is a local dish that consist of local ingredients all in one pot. Trinidad and Tobago have a mix of Chinese, Creole , European, Spanish and other influences of food all across the region. Local food market has allows made because everyone has to eat but one market that is clearly dominating the region heavily are fast food restaurants. These fast food restaurants consist of Mc Donald’s, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Starbucks just to name a few. These names may sound familiar because they all originated from the United States of America. Fast food is part of the States culture and has come to Trinidad and Tobago to gain from that. KFC is also a strong influence in Trinidad, some may think that KFC was originate from local soil but not knowing its fully a first world country fast food franchise. Trinidadians when asked what is local food , you will quicker hear them say “ Doubles and KFC”. This is extremely poor as it is allowing the other countries to brainwash us to consume their products on a daily and not supporting local cuisine

So to conclude, is regional integration still necessary in a global community for our overall? The simple answer? Yes. It is needed to unify the Caribbean as a holistic unit to start it’s process of removing the dependency of which First World countries have implanted on the Caribbean territories. Additionally, for the Caribbean to properly reap the rewards of a global market it should be more unified in trade between member states to continue to give the Caribbean a better chance of competing in the global market.
