***TG***
mentions of rape and pornography
At age 14, Joshua Phillips took a bat and continuously landed blows to his 8-year-old neighbor Maddie Clifton's skull. He proceeded to store her body underneath his water bed with nothing on from the waist down but a pair of socks. After hearing sounds of distress coming from Miss Clifton, Phillips advanced on to pull her from under his bed and silence her once and for all with a knife. Before and after the killing of Maddie Clifton, Joshua Phillips was reported to have been watching pornography. Maddie wasn't found until several days later where Phillips' mother was unfortunate enough to discover the horrible fate that became of Clifton's body under son's bed. Joshua was the sent to prison for the murder of Maddie Clifton. Possible reasons for Joshua's crime was constant emotional and verbal abuse from his father and the lack of his mother who suffered from depression as she isolated herself from the world and from her son. Today Joshua Phillips is 33 years old and is still in prison with the hopes of getting out soon due to a law mandated court hearing where on the other hand he still could be facing life without the possibility of parole.

**** TRIGGER WARNING*****
mentions of sodomization
At age 13, Eric Smith was riding his bike home from summer camp when he spotted 4 year old Derrick Robie at the local park and convinced him to go into the woods with him, in which Eric then strangled him, dropped a large rock on the boy’s head, undressed his body, and sodomized him with a tree limb. Around 11:00 a.m., Robie's mother, Doreen, went to the park to pick up her son, only to find that Robie had not arrived. After four hours of investigation, Robie's body was found The murder case made national headlines, largely due to the age of Eric Smith.
Smith has been denied parole eight times since 2002, most recently in April 2016. He will next be eligible for parole in 2018. After the failed 2012 hearing, the parole board cited a concern for public safety in its decision, and Robie's parents opposed his release. At that hearing, he told a parole board he would not return to Savona if released, and instead would go to a shelter or halfway house.Smith was held in a juvenile facility for three years and was then transferred to an open prison for young adults. In 2001, he was transferred to the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, a maximum security prison. As of May 3, 2016, the NYS Department of Corrections website shows him incarcerated at Collins Correctional Facility a medium security prison for male inmates in Erie County, New York.
ARTICLE:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/why-did-eric-kill-10-12-2004/

Madrid was found underneath a mattress in Meadow Lake field in February 2014. They were out vandalizing mobile homes. Madrid attempted to stab Villalobos with a screwdriver after they argued and Villalobos defended himself which resulted in the death of Madrid. Villalobos has a intellectual disability where his reasoning capacity is very low and his verbal skills are very limited. In 2013, the court decided that Villalobos was not competent to stand trial and was sent to the state Behavioral Health Institute in Las Vegas. This was an attempt for him to become competent to stand trial. During his time, at the Behavioral Health Institute, Villalobos started to show the ability to learn and retain information. Mid 2017 after a 3 hour testimony, a district court judge ruled that Brandon Villalobos is competent to stand trial.

The victim was an 11-year-old child and they were fighting over a ball. The young 11-year-old girl was in fifth grade and was described as a straight A student who loved dancing and double dutch. The two girls were playing with each other and the mother stepped out for a bit and while the children remained unsupervised in that little amount of time, a dispute broke out which ended in the brutal murder of an 11-year-old girl with her whole life ahead of her, over a ball. Neighbors and police describe the 9-year-old girl as “troubled” (12) and that this behavior was not out of the ordinary. This sad story brings up the controversy of sentencing children to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Should this 9-year-old child be legally sentenced to rot away the rest of her days in a prison cell? Or will she get the chance to obtain her life back after serving a limited prison sentence?
~

On Christmas in the year 1998 , a 16 year old, named Shawn attacks his father during his sleep. He stabs him continuously until his dad realizes his attacker was his son. He than tackles him on the floor and they are both taken to the hospital. Shawn's mother remembers waking up to her husband screaming as the attack was happening. Before this event had occurred tension had arose because of his marijuana usage and expulsion from school. When they arrived at the hospital Shawn did not remember what had happened until a police officer had approached him and said he was going to be charged for attempted murder and if his father didn't survive for first degree murder. Prosecutors tried to convict Shawn in adult court and if found guilty he would have served 15 years to life. He discussed his sentenced with his parents and decided to plead guilty through the juvenile system than risk being tried as an adult and facing 15 years. Shawn has been arrested and charged with strong-arm robbery before this event occurred and has struggled with an alcohol addiction his mother brought upon him. Even though he has had this history the judge ruled that he will remain Santa Clara County's Juvenile Hall until he is 19 years old.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/juvenile/four/shawn.html
