Products that make up the individual components include: aluminum, glass, and lithuim ions.
-Aluminum is acquired by open pit surface mining. The negative environmental impacts caused by obtaining aluminum include the destruction of habitats, erosion, and pollution of chemicals needed for the mining process. Also, hundred of gallons of water is needed dissolve the aluminum in the refining stage.
-Glass is also collected via surface mining and it’s environmental impacts include thermal pollution and the burning of fossil fuels.
-Lithium can be found in either a mixture of lithium chloride and potassium chloride, or in different brines/minerals/clay. The environmental impacts of lithium include the disruption of land and of natural habitats as well as the burning of fossil fuels.

iPhones are made in a factory in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou. They are then out on a plane that can easily carry 150,000 iPhones tucked into its aluminum canisters. They are first shipped to the United States and then sent to other countries. Pollution created mainly deals with the air in regards to the transportation and shipping of iPhones.

“So we assess all our products in our Reliability Testing Lab, using rigorous testing methods that simulate customers’ experiences with their devices. For example, we analyze how devices stand up to extreme heat and cold, exposure to water and everyday chemicals, and scratch tests from materials like denim and metals like coins. All new materials, including recycled materials, are tested extensively to make sure they meet our performance and durability standards.” https://www.apple.com/environment/resources/
Apple also built a robot named Daisy that is “an innovative and efficient way to reclaim more of the valuable materials used.”
