Tips while preparing: 
  • identify what each source is talking about (il s’agit de…)
  • identify its position (for or against the argument)
  • identify who wrote the article/completed the study (enquête)
  • Determine your argument, then identify any information from each source that can help to support your position

Tips while writing: 
  • Make sure you keep the topic of the essay clear in your mind. Begin by rewriting the topic at the top of your paper. This will not affect your score.
  • Avoid using je/mon and vous/votre in your essay, instead use on/son/sa/ses where you would often use “you” in English
  • In the introduction paragraph, you should clearly state your opinion in your thesis; avoid using "je" and instead use things like "il est clair que, il est évident que, etc."
  • In the body paragraphs, it's easy to organize your thoughts by using one source per paragraph. Make sure to cite the source (selon Source 1, le locuteur de Source 3 partageait, etc....)
  • For the source that does not support your argument, make sure to contradict it with your supports from the other sources
  • Conclude your essay by restating your argument; if you feel confident, introduce a new point or use this opportunity to counter argue.

Remember: this is a persuasive essay, so you MUST express your opinion and try to convince others of having that same opinion. You MUST clearly choose a side!

  • It is better to be cut-off than not to fill the time.

  • Identify the topic.
  • REMEMBER: rarely is the topic something like "compare fashion," it will likely be something like "compare the importance of fashion." Look for the qualifying word (l'importance de, le rôle de, la présence de, le lieu de)
  • Identify a Product, Practice, and Perspective on the topic for each culture, then choose how they compare 
  • ex: la responsabilité du gouvernement pour la protection des citoyens sur la toile
    • Product: both have laws to protect citizens on the web
    • Practice: France has a lot of government control, the US doesn't, 
    • Perspective: the French are okay with surveillance, the US aren't

Tips:
  • Read the questions first
  • For text sources, mark where you you found the answer
  • For audio sources, work to answer the questions when you listen the first time, then double-check when it plays the second time
  • You will not be penalized for wrong answers, but you will not earn the points, so try to answer each question.
