Paleolithic Age

-In the Paleolithic Age, there were no roads, farms, or villages.
-Nomads move from place to place to find food. They traveled in bands (groups) of 20-30.
-Paleolithic people lived by hunting and gathering. The animals they hunted were buffalo, bison, wild goats, reindeer, and more. The plants they gathered were wild nuts, berries, fruits, wild grains, and green plants. Men hunted big animals and developed tools and weapons to help them. Women stayed near camp, watched the children, and gathered plants.
-Early technology were tools and methods to perform tasks. Around this time, sticks, stones, and tree branches were technology. Flint technology was very sharp and a big breakthrough.
-They advanced flint technology to where they could make harpoons, fish hooks, scraping tools, and sharp-edged tools.
-Early people who lived in cold climates used animal skins to stay warm. They found shelter in natural resources such as caves and rock overhangs. Eventually, they learned to make their own shelters out of animal skins, brush, and wood. In colder climates, shelters were sometimes made of ice and snow. Where wood was rare, shelters were made out of animal skins and bones. In warmer places, people lived in caves and huts, not for shelter, but for protection against animal attacks.
-Fire helped out early humans' life. It provided warmth, light, and scared away predators of the night. Also, fire cooked food for the early humans.
-They created fire by rubbing wood together and striking iron pyrite against other rocks.
-Before the Paleolithic Age, early humans communicated through sounds and gestures. In the Paleolithic Age, they developed language. The more technology they invented, the more words they created.
-Another way of communication was art. Early humans painted pictures of horses, boar, bison, deer, lions, oxen, panthers, and more out of rocks the colors of yellow, black, and red mixed with animal fat.
-Technological developments in the Paleolithic Age were tools and fire.
-Ice Ages were periods in time when it was extremely cold and most of the land was covered by glaciers. The most recent one was 100,000 years ago. Glaciers traveled across parts of Europe, Asia and North America. As the glaciers expanded, the water level of the oceans was decreased. Low sea levels left dry land exposed, forming a land bridge, which was used to travel to other continents and settle there.
-Ice Age climates forced early humans to adapt by adding fat to their food, making more durable shelters, used animal furs to stay warm, and fire to provide light and warmth.
-The last Ice Age lasted 90,000 years.
