Akkad agreed to finance the film, despite its low $300,000 budget, on Carpenter's confidence and his willingness to forgo his fee. Carpenter received $10,000 for directing, writing, and composing the music, retaining rights to 10 percent of the film's profits. Carpenter hired multi-skilled team member Tommy Lee Wallace, who crafted the iconic Michael Myers mask from a Captain Kirk mask for $2 Many actors wore their own clothes, and Curtis' wardrobe was from J.C. Penney for around $100. Unique in its collaborative nature, the filming process saw cast members often assisting in equipment setup and shots. The film's climax scene was shot in two homes on Orange Grove Avenue, resembling a Midwestern street with few palm trees. The crew had difficulty finding pumpkins in the spring, and artificial fall leaves had to be reused for multiple scenes. Local families dressed their children in Halloween costumes for trick-or-treat scenes. Halloween was filmed in 20 days over a four-week period in May 1978. Much of the filming was completed using a Panaglide, a clone of the Steadicam, the then-new camera that allowed the filmmakers to move around spaces smoothly. Filming locations included South Pasadena, California; Garfield Elementary School in Alhambra, California; and the cemetery at Sierra Madre, California. An abandoned house owned by a church stood in as the Myers house.

During Halloween Ends, Laurie Strode and serial killer Michael Myers face off in the final act of a decade-spanning conflict. The film focuses mostly on Laurie's granddaughter, Allyson, and newcomer, Corey Cunningham, during its first two acts. As one of the franchise's most controversial and infuriating decisions, the decision to have someone relatively insignificant defeat Michael Myers remains a controversial and infuriating one.
