It is similar by how it discusses her involvement with the underground railroad. It is different because it gives different background knowledge prior to and after the underground railroad. Much of the background and period discussing her youth are left out of the history books.

Did she really lead a battle of several hundred slaves? I think the kids would be impressed to do their own research to prove or disprove all of these roles that Harriet Tubman played.

This book is similar to a traditional textbook segment because it is factual and contributed to our prior knowledge. It acts as a mentor text more than just a textbook itself. The book also gives the readers an emotional connection to Harriet Tubman through the imagery, something that a traditional textbook doesn’t do. We also never knew that she went by different names, something that our textbooks may have left out.

Textbooks may include more general background knowledge and may talk more about the Civil War where the book gives a more general idea of Harriet Tubman along with full detail of her story. These books tend to also be more engaging to students.
