At present, the shortcomings of the traditional management model of Chinese university libraries are gradually becoming prominent, and the application and management needs of automation systems are becoming more urgent. Major universities have already started the automation transformation and development of libraries. The automation transformation of acquisition, cataloging, circulation, reading and information consultation of university libraries has obtained corresponding technical support.

For example, Shanghai Library in China is increasing Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery services. We can retrieve books from different branches, borrow more books, and realize resource sharing.

The focus of library automation system is library business and service level, but lack of attention to administrative management. The existing automation system management software in most universities is single, which is limited to personnel and equipment management, which is not conducive to the actual application of the automation system of university libraries and affects the inter-library document exchange. The difficulty of library automation system management lies in the convenience of resource sharing and retrieval between Chinese academic libraries.

Above is the link to the National Science Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one of the best developed libraries in China.
The overall status of library automation in China is as below:
Analyzing the present situation of library automation construction in China, there are several levels. First, libraries in developed areas and large libraries above the provincial level are the vanguard of automation construction and development. Their computer management systems have been or are being updated, and this work has begun in the late 1990s yet. For example, Beijing Library uses wenjin system to replace the old NEC system. And establish resource service subnet to speed up network construction. Some provincial large libraries are also seeking more advanced management software to replace the original backward management software. Second, some advanced libraries at the county level have completed the construction of library automation and started to enter the LOCAL area network to carry out interlibrary loan. Third, some libraries in remote and backward areas have also begun to establish library automation management system, but the software and hardware used are still relatively backward, unable to carry out network services. From the above analysis, there are great differences in the development of library automation in different regions of China. However, in general, the library automation construction in China has developed rapidly in recent years. Many libraries have basically realized the automation of business management functions and entered the preliminary practical stage of integrated system. However, the network has not driven the automatic construction of the whole library. Some libraries have built a low speed network, and the transmission, acquisition and use of literature information resources through high speed network is still in the experimental stage.
