Self-Sufficiency

"If we're not a charity case, then get a job."
This explains how the parents don't want any charity even though they are in need of shelter and food. They want to be able to provide and live on their own but they aren't doing anything. The kids have to take care of themselves at an early stage because of their immature parents. This represents self-sufficiency in that they are relying on themselves to survive rather than trying to get help from others even though it could lead to helping their children more and they could be healthier. This picture is of people working hard on a project which shows how they are trying to support themselves.

Fantasy v.s Reality

“ You’ll never build the glass castle.” “Even if you do, I’ll be gone in 3 months for New York.”
Rex has this grand plan to build a glass castle for the family to live in but in reality they can't even get the foundation for the house. The kids dig a foundation but it gets filled up with garbage because they can't pay for it. They soon realize that it's just a silly idea and that if they can't even pay for their garbage to be taken care of then there is no hope in making the castle. This represents how her father is always dreaming rather than trying to make it happen. Her parents don't pay attention to what is happening and how to fix their situation. They insead only care about themselves. This is an image of a castle which shows the fantasy of Rex's dream to build the glass castle.

“Why do I always have to be the one who earns the money?” Mom asked. “You have a job. You can earn money. Lori can earn money, too. I’ve got more important things to do.”
This shows how Rose Mary doesn't want to follow the rules to help her family. She just wants to focus on her own things like art. she only cares about herself and wants to do what she wants rather than following some rules for her family to live a better life. Her issue is that she only wants to focus on her art instead of trying to find a job to support her family when in need of any type of help. She makes excuses instead and is irresponsible. This picture shows fishermen fishing when there is a sign that clearly says there is no fishing allowed.

“SInce when is it wrong for a father to take car of his little girl?”
Jeannette loved her father but at the same time despised him. She hated his ways and how he was always drunk and buying alcohol. She loved him because he was her father and he had also shown some type of care in his own way before. She had also been with him all her life. She didn't really consider it a high type of love though. She didn't like his ways of thinking and making things up to feel better. She was tired of his selfishness and how he acted on his own without the family. He gave money to her so that she could stay in a class for college and it was supportive but it was like a one time thing. They loved each other because they were family and that's it. They don't truly love each other. They cut all ties after they argued when they met up and didn't start talking again until Rex had died and even then. They still disliked each other and didn't meet up otherwise. The picture shows a person hanging from the heart like it's not true love but somewhat enough just like some families.

“I was expecting Rex to be running up and smack him but he didn’t come.”
Jeannette had followed everything her father had said and done. She thought he was the coolest person ever while she was young. As she grew older, she realized that her father was everything wrong. Her father didn't care about his family and was addicted to drugs and alcohol. She soon realized that the only people she could rely on were her own siblings. She starts to understand how life works and tries to fix the problems on her own. She doesn't want to involve her parents because she knows that it would be bothersome to them and that they wouldn't help anyway. She somehow fixes her problems with the bully and finds a way to finally stay at peace by writing in the news and staying in her teacher's classroom. She finds comfort and works hard to keep it. The books in the image below represent knowledge which Jeannette had learned in order to cope with the irresponsibilities of her parents.

Chaos and Order

“When other girls came and threw away their lunches in the garbage, I’d go retrieve it.”
Jeannette was in a state where she had to get food from other student's trash. The chaos was that Jeannette was being bullied and was going through the phase of realizing what kind of situation she and her family were in. Eventually order came when she left for NYC to get an education and work to support herself. The chaos started again when her parents moved to NYC. They started to bother them again. Her parents weren't the smartest or greatest. They didn't do anything even when she was sexually assaulted. Instead they just brushed it off as something you have to experience. The picture below represents how chaotic Jeannette's life has been and how few of normal people who have helped her were.
