The turning point of the first world war on the western front. The Germans assault on the Chemin des Dames at the end of May brought the German army back to the Marne river. On July 18th the French army, which included multiple American divisions, initiated a series of offensives that pushed Germans back from the Marne to the Vesle river. The Battle saw AEF division fighting side by side for the first time. The experience gained in the fighting near the Marne would prove invaluable as the AEF began independent operations in September.

In the morning of September 12, 1918, went to war. The members of the AEF had never fought in a formation larger than the corps under French or British leadership. Now under the command of General John J. Pershing, they launched an operation which was known as "America's first truly great modern battle." This was also a four-day offensive to show the Allies and Germans that Americans were able to operate as an independent command. This then helped the grand Allied offensive that seized the initiative along and across the Western Front and paved a way for an ultimate victory in this war.

The Meuse-Argonne Offensive was the final major Allied offensive of World War I, occurring from September 26 to November 11, 1918. Led by General John J. Pershing, it involved over 1.2 million American soldiers and was the largest and bloodiest operation for the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in the war, resulting in over 26,000 American deaths and significant German casualties.
