I would usually have starter questions up on the first slide to get the students settled and working while we could be waiting for others to join. I may have questions on the slide that i want written answers to. If playing a video i will assess their understanding of it by showing questions on the slide before we watch the video. 
I may use a count down on the board if I've given the students a task to do and  i want it done with in a certain time.
I have made quizlets that I project on the board and get the class to answer.

In all of my lessons I have a PowerPoint presentation prepared. I will have higher and lower order questions included in the PowerPoint. I frequently refer to videos on YouTube so the students gain a greater understanding of a certain topic.
