  • In addition to the short-term effects of violence, the long-term trauma can follow someone for several years following the event(s). 
  • For many marginalized populations, discrimination and systemic violence are everyday experiences. People labelled/with intellectual disabilities are much more susceptible to abuse, and are less likely to report acts of violence (Spagnuolo & Earle, 2017). 
  • People labelled/with intellectual disabilities are 2.9 times more likely to be physically assaulted, and 10.7 times more likely to be sexually assaulted than non-disabled people (Spagnuolo & Earle, 2017). 
  • 83% of women with disabilities will experience sexual abuse at some point in their lives. 40% to 70% of girls with intellectual disabilities will be sexually victimized before the age of 18 (Spagnuolo & Earle, 2017).

    • For example, patients at Huronia Regional Centre reported being punched, cuffed, kicked, having their heads bashed against a wall, or shoved down a toilet bowl (Wheatley, 2013).
    • In 1956, a government inspector examined Huronia and found three padlocks under a patient’s mattress and metal knives (Wheatley, 2013).
    • The Willard Report of 1976, commissioned by the government of Ontario, found  reports of a murder committed by a former patient, and a horrific rape and murder of a patient in the 1970s (Wheatley, 2013).

  • Trauma occurs when people experience an overwhelmingly negative event or series of events, including violence (Government of Canada, 2018).
  • Research indicates that youth labelled/with intellectual disability experience exposure to trauma at a higher rate than their nondisabled peers (Government of Canada, 2018).
  • This part of the population also appears to be at an increased risk for physical abuse, physical restraint and seclusion, sexual abuse, and emotional neglect (Government of Canada, 2018)

  • The lack of resources outside of the institution forced individuals inside where they experienced years of violence. 
  • While there has been progress, our research has shown that the cycle of systematic trauma has yet to be repaired.
