L'idée principale du positivisme était que la connaissance scientifique devrait être reconnue comme la seule connaissance véritable. Le penseur français Auguste Comte (1798-1857) est le principal créateur du mouvement positiviste. Auguste Comte considérait notamment que l'homme ne peut atteindre les choses en elle-même (leur être, leur essence) et que seuls les faits expérimentés ont une valeur universelle. Partant de ce modèle, Waren Weaver définit la notion de redondance. En stratégie de communication, il s’agit de répéter en faisant évoluer le message afin de mettre le récepteur en situation d’appétence cognitive.
Norbert Wiener quant à lui, ajoute au modèle de Shannon une boucle de rétroaction : toute personne qui produit un message doit attendre l’effet pour transformer le contenu autour de principes rétroactifs.

La communication se fait ici en deux étapes : du média vers les leaders d’opinion, puis du leader vers son groupe d’appartenance. Ainsi, le média n’agit pas directement sur le public mais par le biais de leaders d’opinion. 
Ici la cause est l’émission de télé/radio, l’effet est l’influence exercée. Ce modèle permet d’étudier l’influence, l’efficacité des messages, les médiations ou encore les mécanismes de persuasion et de renforcement de l’opinion.

En documentation, le marketing documentaire obéit à ce modèle : faire des acquisitions et en parallèle, prendre en compte les réactions puis ajouter des compléments.
