Since completing WB10, I have made further progress on the track 'Faucet' and my other derliverables for this project. I have been working hard throughout the Christmas break to be able to focus on more technical tasks I have to complete in order to release this single in the most effective manner. I have finally finished recording and I am now in the stages of mixing. I have also completed the documentary that will be released after Faucet to further promote the track. I also organised and completed a photoshoot for the promotion and cover art of Faucet. I am fortunate enough to have an excellent team behind me who have supported and invested their time into this project as much as I have and will continue to do so until my release has come into fruition.

In order to release the track I have these tasks to complete:

Mix and master the track (my producer and a master engineer have already got that covered).
Set a release date.
Upload the track onto a distribution service. I will need to do research into this to find the service most suitable for me.
Have the cover art ready to upload.
Sign up for PRS and PPL. This will ensure I get an income stream from my track.
Tease then promote Faucet using a 3 week marketing campaign.

South Lanes Studio Vocals Session

On 11th January I went into the studio at South Lanes Studio to record vocals. I had booked 4 hours for both lead and backing vocals for Faucet and my follow up single 'Stranger'. Though I had been recovering from a cold, my voice was behaving as it should and I managed to record vocals to the best of my ability. For both tracks, we recorded both full takes of each song and also recorded section by section so that we could get a recording that felt both natural and perfected.

Faucet needed extra attention to its precision as the timing needed to be exact whilst keeping a high energy throughout. Stranger required precision but in a different way. Stranger needed to feel looser and like it had breath but the pitching needed to be exact. I struggled with a few riffs in this track, however overall, I eased into this recording session quickly.

We used a Rode K2 Tube Condenser Microphone to record vocals which was a new microphone that I hadn't recorded on before. Previously, I had only recorded on a Neumman U87 in a studio and whilst that is a great microphone, I had always found it was too bright for my voice as it uses a lot of top end. I explained to Sam Clines, my sound engineer at South Lanes, that I wanted a warmer tone vocally in the tracks and he suggested we use the Rode.

Unfortunately we ran out of time to record all the backing vocals but we managed to get really good takes of both tracks and a solid comp. I am very pleased with how the vocals turned out and I am glad they are finally finished.

Photoshoot for cover art

On 7th February I did a photoshoot for the cover art of Faucet. Two weeks prior to the shoot, I contacted two photographers, one digital and one film, who I know both on a personal level. They had mentioned to me previously that they would be interested in doing a shoot for a low price. The brief for the photoshoot was to be in a bathtub with a fancy/vintage looking bath. I also bought a bubble gun and outfit for the shoot. I had my band member Bonnie attend the shoot with me as an extra. I was fortunate enough that my mum's friend had access to a location in which had the features I was after. It is a 1914's mannor house that still had all of its original features. I also had access to professional lighting as my brother works on film sets so I was able to access this for free.

The day ran very smoothly and we shot pictures in two locations of the house - the bathtub (as planned) and the dining room. The plan is to pick a photo for the cover and then Bonnie will paint it in an impressionist style which I have reference photo's for. I have attached all of this in my google drive WB11 portfolio of evidence.

Faucet Cover Art Mood Board

I have taken inspiration from an art style called 'impressionism'. I couldn't find an accurate depiction of the type of picture I want however, I feel these images encapsulate the mood and feeling I want to incorporate in the cover art. The mood, colours, subjects and locations in these paintings are ideas I am very drawn to. The Joni Mitchell album cover was where the idea originated from. Her cover art is so striking and evokes the exact feelings she wants you to feel from it. I want my cover art to strike a chord the same way. I have taken these images off of my pinterest board which gives more insight to my aesthetic as an artist. The link can be found below:

Creating a Contact List

It is important to note that in order for me to release a single and for it to be heard by as many people as possible, I must find the necessary contacts to send the track to. From my research, I have found a list of suitable radio DJ's who I can send Faucet to. Although it is less realistic to contact radio 1,2&6 DJ's, knowing their contact information and getting my name known is working towards my goal of getting on those stations. More realistic ways of getting my song on the radio is through BBC Introducing and local radio stations such as PlatformB.

I have also found some websites in which I can submit my music to independent Spotify playlists. On the website 'SubmitHub' there are a list of curators who you can view by genre. This helps to find suitable curators who you can send your track to. It also lists how many monthly listeners their playlists have.
