The British Empire was at its height the largest empire in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power. By 1922 the British Empire held sway over about 458 million people, one-quarter of the world's population at the time, and covered more than 33,700,000 km2, almost a quarter of the Earth's total land area. Some of the countries that were a part of the British Empire were Canada, Iraq, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ireland, Australia, Sudan, Ghana, New Zealand, the Indian Empire, Kenya, Nigeria etc. Because Britain had colonies all over the world, the phrase “the sun never sets on the British Empire” got used a lot. The meaning behind it was that there was always daylight on at least one of the colonies.

The British Empire gained its dominans from The Royal Navy, one of the greatest Navies at the time, the British army and their wealth. Britain had a stable government and had been through an industrial revolution. Britain used their dominans to gain money on colonies, become more power and spread their culture and language to other parts of the world.
Benjamin Disraëli, the British Prime Minister, called India "the brightest jewel in the crown".

India had valuable resources that Europe wanted to exploit, like mineral ores and textiles. Even more importantly, it was both a huge source of cheap labor and a large market for British goods. As its largest colonial territory, India was the most important of the overseas possessions of the British Empire.

There was both advantages and disadvantages for the colonies. Some of the advantages were the spread of the English language another advantage was the changes and innovations in medical care and education. Some disadvantages were the loss of land and discrimination but also that the British Empire profited from slavery in the 1700’s. Another important disadvantage was the fact that the profit from the goods didn't go to the colonies, most of it went to Britain. Therefore the colonies didn’t earn that much money on their own goods. The British Empire was declined in 1945 because the colonies took an increasingly independent view and by the late 1960's most of the colonies were independent countries.

Colonialism has left its imprint in many areas of politics, culture and economy: growing cities, surrounded by peri-urban settlements, a proud nationalism and regionalism amongst the newly independent island states, an uneasy mix of customary and Parliamentary systems of government and administration, systems of education and governments dominated by English as the major regional language.

The British Empire was the most powerful in the 20’th century, around 1922 and 1924 and some of the countries included in the empire were; India, Australia, Canada, Kenya, Singapore, New Zealand, Jamaica and Nigeria.

The quote ”the sun never sets on the British Empire” symbolizes how powerful and great the empire was - the empire was all over the world, and that explains, how it could be nighttime, and in another part, it could be daytime, because the empire covered so much land, so the sun could never be set all over the empire at the same time.

There is no doubt that Britain was powerful. It used its wealth, its armies and its navy to defeat rival European countries and to conquer local people to establish its empire. However, the empire did not just rely on force. In most of the empire Britain relied heavily on local people to make it work. Until the early nineteenth century, the primary purpose of Imperialist policies was to facilitate the acquisition of as much foreign territory as possible, both as a source of raw materials and in order to provide real or potential markets for British manufactures

The British Prime minister, Benjamin Disraëli, claimed India was “the brightest jewel in the crown,” because India was a more popular and valuable British colony in terms of natural and human resources. India had plenty of natural resources like valuable gems, cotton, and tea and so on. As the population of India was very high compared to other countries Britain were able to earn much wealth from taxations. It is said that Britain were able to earn around twelve million pounds annually from the Indian people itself. The title as ‘the brightest Jewel in the Crown,' was given to India by the British as they could find some preciousness in this country. In fact they found that India was source of several precious stones like Sapphires, rubies, diamonds, emeralds and many more expensive spices.

Some of the advantages for the colonies being a part of the British Empire were; that some of these changes involved innovations in medical care, education and railways. The British Empire fought to abolish slavery in the 1800s, but it profited from slavery in the 1700s.

The disadvantages were: that for many peoples the British empire meant loss of lands, discrimination and prejudice

The end of the empire came in the years after World War 2, with most of Britain's colonies ruling themselves so by the late 1960s, most of Britain's territories had become independent countries.

Parliamentary democracy, the English language and the Christian religion can be found in many countries.

The British empire has had a huge impact on the world. The majority of former colonies still keep their ties with Britain through the Commonwealth. Many countries around the world now have multicultural populations. Parliamentary democracy, the English language and the Christian religion can be found in many countries. These are just a few of the ways in which the British empire has had a lasting effect on world history.

With its 33,700,000 km2 and with a population of about 458 million people, the british empire had their peak at the year 1922. Some of the countries that were under the British Empire was: Canada, Sudan, Australia, Indian Empire, South Africa, New Zealand, Sierra Leone, Iraq. Because of the size of the British Empire, there would always be a part of it that had daylight in it. For example if it was nighttime in England, it would be daytime in India and vice versa. Because of the size of the UK (very small) they had become good at defending themselves (fighting) because the threats came from all around - this made them good at warfare - the british navy was also very impressive. England had no relation to the vatican (there was a king who got mad and severed all ties), they could control their politics themselves and didn’t have to pay taxes to the pope. the industrial revolution made england the leading country in technology. The reason for the British Empire was at first mostly economically, since then it evolved both politically and economically-India was wildly profitable with its spices, cheap laborers and others exports, but its location is also prime for being able to trade by sea with foreign ports. Also a lot of precious stones had been found in India, which was all together the reason why India was called “The brightest jewel in the crown”. A big advantage was that the British Empire helped fighting to abolish slavery in the 1800s, but a disadvantage was that they took advantage of slavery in the 1700. A big disadvantage was also that the countries which were colonized lost a great part of their land, and of course independence. A advantage could be that the British Empire gave innovations to medical care. It was in the 1960s most of Britian’s colonies became independent. Since the 19th hundred some parts of the empire started ruled themselves, but they were still a part of the empire. The first and the second world war left Britain weakened and less interest in its empire. Many parts of the empire contributed with troops and resources to the wars and the empire become more split. Later the Asian and African colonies began to end British rule and in the end of 1960s most of the British colonies become independent countries. Britain has left an impact in many of the countries they colonized, the most noticeable imprint is that they speak english in many countries.

In 1922 the British Empire was the most powerful where they ruled over 458 million people, which is one-quarter of the world's population, and they covered 33,700,000 km2 which is almost a quarter of Earth’s land area. In the 33,700,000 km2 land area some of the countries were; Bermuda, Burma, USA, Canada, Australia, Falkland Islands and India. Because there were so many countries people often used the saying “The sun never sets on the British Empire”, which was used because they had colonies all over the world in different time-zones so there will always be daytime on one or more of the colonies. The British were able to cover so much land because they had so much wealth, they used their army and navy to conquer the areas. However, they also used the locals help to make it work. The reasons behind the British Empire was mostly economically, the countries they invaded had new or more resources than they had in Britain. However, there were probably also some political reasons behind, because there were so much rivalry between the European countries it was to say that they were the best and strongest. When it comes to the economic reasons one of the main profiters were India, they had a lot of natural resources such as spices, cotton and gems, India also had cheap laborers and they had a great location for trading by sea this lead to Benjamin Disraëli to say that India was “the brightest jewel in the crown”. However, in the 1950s and 60s the British Empire started to fall apart and the colonies became independent. This was mainly due to the First and Second World War, which left Britain weakened. The colonies may be independent may be independent, but the British Empire still left an imprint, such as; poverty where there is a huge difference between the upper-class and the lower-class, another is that they made the countries Christian against their will. However, it is not all bad, most of the countries have better health care and they are English-speaking.

India, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa was some of the countries that were a part of the British Empire. By 1914 the empire had expanded almost as it ever would. The British Empire was so extensive that there was always at least one part with daylight and therefore the saying “The sun never sets on the British Empire” was developed. The British Navy, The Size and Location, Britain's Distance from the Catholic Church, The Industrial Revolution were all things which made it possible for the Britain to gain dominion over so many countries. The purpose of the British Empire was politically and economically because of the export and because of extensive land. From 1874 to 1881 Benjamin Disraëli, the British Prime Minister called India "The brightest jewel in the crown" because India had valuable resources like mineral ores and textiles. India was the most important of the overseas possessions of the British Empire and the centerpiece, therefore, the “Jewel in the Crown.” If we look on the advantages of being part of the British Empire during the Victorian age. you will see that the language allowed people to communicate through one language. Also Democracy was brought by the British Empire.
