China has been quite active in the South China Sea. Beijing has been engaged in a campaign to build artificial islands in an effort to create a new territory. So far they have built up the equivalent of about 1,500 football fields on submerged rocks, reef, and the sea floor.

Experts believe that valuable fossil fuels are located in the South China Sea. There are only estimates, but it is estimated that around 11 billion barrels of oil and 190 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. This is a valuable contribution that could be made, but it is being used for militarized land.

The location is very sneakily placed. It links the Indian Ocean and the Pacific, which turns out to be a critical shipping channel. About half of the world's merchant ships go through that channel and blocking the channel will result in a larger dispute and possibly even larger arguments. Not only do merchant ships pass through, but military navigation also passes through. If those oceans are controlled, China will most likely not allow, or at least limit, the amount of military navigation of foreign countries.

This will then lead to them mining the available gas and oil found there, providing work for the Chinese and oil and gases for the rest of the world to use.

This dispute began in 1970 when the Philippians began exploring for oil. Their investigation was interrupted when China protested after gas was discovered in 1976. The dispute has carried on throughout the years but has blown out of balance when it was brought to the light that China had declared ownership.

China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei all have opposing interests over sections in the South China Sea. Although the US is not involved or picking sides, they have sent military ships to help contain any violence that may flare. There are concerns that the area is becoming a flashpoint, with potentially grave global consequences.

This issue is an unusually hard one to solve. A formal agreement would've been best, but no one seems to be backing down. We must tread lightly so that everyone remains happy in order to prevent a war between countries. A new agreement of territory is one idea to keep many satisfied, but it is not perfect. Stripping China of the territory they demanded extra would be the most logical approach, but worries of war still hang above all.
