The Catcher in the Rye deals with many problems that people can relate to, as we see Holden deal with many internal conflicts that plague him such as depression and isolation, he does not let others help him, therefore pushing others away, causing even more isolation. This endless loop of problems is what Holden constantly experiences in the book and many people have similar feelings of angst, isolation, and annoyance during their teenage years that Holden has shown in the book. This shows how this book speaks to a larger cultural identity, as many people can relate to this book and see themselves in the pages, which is what really makes this book one of the classics. One of the most crucial moments in the story is when Holden is talking to his 9-year-old sister “Phoebe”, this is after she discovers he has been kicked out of school and she says “You don't like anything that’s happening”(187), Holden is pushed back from this statement and assures her that he does saying, “Yes I do. Yes I do. Sure I do. Don't say that. Why the hell would you say that?”(187). But as Phoebe keeps talking about how he does not like anything, Holden cannot think of anything that he likes, and we see an inner look at Holden, how his annoyance and constant nitpicking affected him, as he could not list anything that he liked. On top of that, these emotions and actions have pushed others away, as we see Sally (one of his old friends) be pushed away due to Holden saying that he could not withstand the sight of her, which left her distraught as she left him. These problems and emotions we see Holden face, are very relatable as many people can relate to the angst and isolation seen in the book, and the boundaries they create that hurt others that are close to them, these problems speak to a larger cultural identity that truly makes this book a classic.

-Books that should shape you are books that the main character grows into a better person, we see him learn and grow through the story as he learns new lessons that better himself. That is what we should be reading as it shows an example that we can always grow.

-Books that should shape us are books that seek mystery and wonder, so that even though we are growing up we still have the sense of wonder and imagination, this could be a fiction book, a superhero comic book, books that sense imagination.

-Books that should shape us are books that we learn something new, this could be a hard subject like race, as growing up is all about taking on responsibility and this responsibility is learning about more adult subjects, like to kill a mockingbird where it talks alot about racism, or the catcher in the rye where it shows isolation of the main character.
