Deliver: Harvard Implicit Bias Test 1

Hello everybody! Attached you can see my results of a Harvard Implicit Bias test that I took. This implicit bias test assessed my implicit bias towards gender roles and positions in careers. According to the results, I have a greater unconscious bias of association between men in career fields and woman hosting family roles than the converse. It is very important not to let our emotions get the best of us when reading the results of such tests, as it can lead us to forget the true purpose of the tests, which is to collect data and give us some insight into how we feel subconsciously in certain situations. It surprised me greatly that I withheld such a bias. My mother was the most involved individual in my rearing and she was the English department chair for her school district for some time. Initially, I was upset by the findings of the test, since it goes against my core beliefs (heck, just the other day, I purchased a book about how inherent male privilege harms women); however, it is always important to acknowledge our implicit biases, as it lets us know what we need to be aware of so we can take the steps needed to change ourselves. Clearly, there are many areas I still need to improve in, such as continuing to educate myself about feminism and taking action to support women's rights movements.

Hey there, you can see above the results of the second Harvard Implicit Bias test that I took. The purpose of this test (aside from data collection) was to determine if the consumer had an unconscious bias towards fat people rather than thin people. This was done by examining the correlation between negative words and fat people versus positive words and thin people. Like the last test I took, I was initially very upset by my results. During the post-exam survey, I clicked that I felt as though the results were very incorrect; however, after further contemplation, I realized that there very well could be an underlying bias towards heavier people. What intrigues me most about this concept is that I myself have a very high BMI, as I weigh in at about 320 lbs., and I am six feet tall. My significant other has even higher numbers. Consciously, I do not believe I think of fat people as being less attractive than thin people or incompetent in any way. Perhaps it is more intricate than these mere associations. Based off the results, it may be in my best interest to educate myself more on the social construct known as "fatphobia" and talk to the community to see how I can better acknowledge these underlying negative associations.

Core Beliefs of Students

All students are deserving of unconditional positive regard and validation. Validation leads to understanding, which makes room for empowerment and growth. All students are capable of learning under optimal circumstances. Not all students are easily motivated, but that should not stop a counselor from making their best effort to try to support students through a wellness perspective to help them reach their best perceived versions of themselves.

Counselor Role in Advocacy

Counselors have an ethical and moral duty to support students with direct support and on behalf of them via advocacy in the way they manage their programs and execute daily tasks. The rights and interests of students are of utmost consideration.

Envisioned Future School Counseling Program

A well-run school counseling program would be one that promotes holistic wellness to students due to the well-educated school counselors who host it. These school counselors will not only be educated in the means to manage and deliver a fully functional program, but also the ethical considerations behind their delivery, so they may understand why they are doing it. This will allow for better future innovation and adaptation.

My Vision Statement

To promote empowerment of students and foster both learning and excellence by providing trauma-informed services and advocacy for all.
