When we only focus on the end result (success) we are sending the wrong message to our students. We should also acknowledge failure (and learning from the mistakes) as an important part of the process and, quite often, something that we will have to learn to deal with. To build up resilience in our students I think we don't have to just look at the end of the learning process but at the process of learning itself. It is very tough to teach students how they are learning when they do not even know what they are learning.
I always tell them that a mistake is a signal of what they are learning and failures can turn into successes even if they often tend to wait for a mark in the end. I share the idea that it is also teachers who must feel resilient to changes in the classroom which - in turn - should not be felt and perceived as a mere trial although it is for most teachers and students.
The classroom and the learning process should be seen as a real opportunity and chance of both personal and academic development and growth

I can easily weaken my students´ confidence by continuously correcting them when they are speaking English. Also, by telling them off if the topic they have prepared is not interesting. They might have put a big effort into it and if I dont appreciate that (even if their work is poor), they will never contribute again. I also like to reflect on my own failures. Everytime you mention something about yourself, they pay more attention. It makes you look real to them, so pointing out my mistakes usually Works for me.

To encourage students I appeal to Braistorming method. With this method, each student gives an idea. All ideas are good no idea is not criticized. In any idea is the positive side of things. Thus all students gain confidence in their own forces and will expose their opinions without any retention

In my opinion, the first step towards building the child's self-confidence is by finding topics that will stir up its interest, exciting and topical subjects. The child will be motivated primarily to seek information about the subject and to form a personal opinion. He then comes up with arguments to convince his colleagues to accept his opinion, agree with him or not and come up with completions.
Building a pleasant environment and treating interesting topics contributes to the development of communication, communication that will make students trust their own opinions and support them with clear arguments.

Actually I find this information so useful.I know that we are not at that extend to use all of them in our daily work,but I'm happy to see that some of them such as praising in public or criticizing in private is something I have always used in my methods.I also have the tendency to create a friendly environment in the classroom,because if I want to feel comfortable in the lesson,is sure they also need to feel the same.

We can weaken it by publicly criticizing, belittling, mocking, always saying no, refusing, not letting them speak out. I think we can destroy their confidence and resilience by "bullying them". If we tell them they aren't worth it, that the ideas they come up with are not good enough or if we tell them their errors are very difficult to overcome... I think we can create a friendly environment by taking students into account. I mean, asking them what they enjoy and they don't like, asking them about songs, films or topics they would like to work on, asking them how they feel and caring about their feelings. If we treat them like a tool for our ultimate work we cannot expect them to care about what they can learn in our specific subject. And if we aren't nice to them, we cannot expect them to be nice to us. Although it may sound simple, I think we just need to treat them as we would like to be treated.

The best thing an educator can do starting his/her lesson is smile at their students!! :) Make them feel comfortable and important. If the students feel that they can rely on their teacher on a personal level, learning process follows easier. Furthermore, if teachers use teaching strategies that provide an opportunity for equal participation, a positive environment is cultivated, leading to students who feel safe to express themselves and get actively involved in the learning process. On the contrary, if we insist on negative feedback, students who receive it will start having a defensive approach towards the lesson and won't be willing to collaborate with their calassmates, as they'll have low self esteem.

We give the children the opportunity to be autonomous and confident in themselves, and we do this by encouraging them to for example, get dressed by themselves. If we constantly tell them that the pants are the other way around, and that they should pay more attention, they will give up and start asking for help so that they don’t commit the same mistake again. With this what I want to say is that many times our children go home with their pants on the wrong side, but we congratulate them because they got dressed by themselves and this will bring their ego up and make them want to try harder. The way we set our goals for the class is, also, very important. Especially with younger pupils, we need to take under consideration the needs, the previous knowledge as well as their interests. In my opinion the most certain way to weaken my students' confidence and independence is to tell them what to do all the time. In addition we can always do our lesson using lecture plus avoiding any chance of independent action during the lessons. We can also correct their mistakes instantly using deceptive ways.
But all the above actions would make the relation between teacher - student a relation of odium. In my opinion, the easiest way to discourage my students is to give them tasks they cannot perform because of lack of previous knowledge. By losing confidence in their abilities, they will be reluctant to make further efforts. It is very easy to weaken student confidence. Some ways of breaking it are:

To correct them continously
Do not recognise their partial achievement, but only the whole right answer.
To refuse to consider their initial level about the topic and they would feel lost.
To compare one to another publicly
To require them something out of their reach

An ideal classroom environment should offer a confortable time to be able to learn from each mistake as an opportunity. Students should be able to work step by step and teachers should give them enough scaffolding to let them to improve their process of learning. Each student must to be respected in his or her own rhythm along the learning process and teachers must give their support to the students in each breakthrough. We surely diminish our students’ confidence when we only point out the negative things of their work, when we use the role of the traditional teacher not letting them point out their ideas and their opinions, when we use activities that they do automatically such as gap-filling and copying from the board….Their independence is also diminished that way and when they aren’t led to think critically just by listening to what the teacher has to say, jlike empty vessels waiting to be filled, when they aren’t allowed to use their creativity in class remaining in the low order thinking skills, when they aren’t allowed to collaborate with each other sharing their ideas. I work with children who are 6 years old. That’s the perfect moment to start the independence's development. In class, it’s very important that children feel conformable and confidence, to do that, we can use a lot of reflection activities in which they can express their experience and they feel that they are important in the classroom and they are a part of something (in this case, a part of a group). It is very easily to demotivate students and to destroy their self esteem.

It’s quite common for teachers to do this even without being aware of the consequences of their actions.

The first big mistake is to criticize students in front of their classmates or permit them to judge themselves as stupid.

The second one is to give them an activity or a problem to solve, which is too hard for them.

The third one is not to praise their success in an adequate way: teachers must use all the marks to evaluate their school works even the highest marks.

The fourth one is to not give them appropriate instructions to solve a difficult problem. It means that the teacher is not good at scaffolding.

I think the subject is very complex to be developed here. In the Italian school, students who are growing up with age are increasingly apathetic and disinterested in learning something, distracted as they are from the intensive use of smartphones and social networks. In a school where I worked I witnessed the following situation:
There was a whole class of four years old in a row, in the hall way to go to the canteen with the kindergarten teacher. A colleague (the mother of one of the children in the line) passes by. Each of us is completely different from someone else..so I usually give my students different time to complete the activity: if someone has finished the homework and another student hasn't; no problem, I say: take your time. We can do a lot to enhance our students' motivation and confidence, but there are tons of things we can do to weaken such process. The ten "black" rules could be:
1. Use an aggressive approach in the class: use the perspective "I talk-you listen"!
2. Prevent students from expressing opinions and give their contribution to the lesson;
3. Use textbooks and written materials as unique source for teaching and therefore learning: no iconic triggers, no videos, no IW , no internet, no audio inputs. Use only one type of lesson: oral transmission of knowledge;
4. Focus on performances: a negative grade is the result of negative behavior only. Grades = person. If you have bad grades you are a bad person.
5. highlight students' mistakes openly and publicly as a form of punishment;
6. Don't submit different materials and tests according to level and cognitive range ; provide only one type of paper; don't allow students to complete their work according to their learning rhythm;
7. Present old, not up to date materials, use standardized readings and exercises only;

We can weaken our students’ confidence if we give them negative feedback. As Laura Reynolds says “Compliment, Correct, Compliment”. Learning about emotional education has changed my way to address student. “Think, feel, act” is a maxima that really works. As an English teacher I had heard my students telling me “No valgo para los idiomas” (=I won’t be able to learn a foreign language) so many times that I knew something I was doing wrong. I wasn’t proud of knowing English was thought to be one of the most difficult subjects in our school curriculum.
I knew I couldn’t teach them all the English words, structures... but I had to make them be independent English learners. Strengthening their independence as English learners made them be more positive to learn a foreign language. When seeing them in class asking for the meaning of a word in a videogame or a song, commenting on an add they’ve watched on TV... make me feel very proud of them.

I think the easiest and best way to weaken students' confidence and resilience would be to make it imperative that they only speak about the subject matter and in a logical way. You make them to keep their thoughts to themselves if they are not a hundred percent sure about what they are going to claim. You turn everything to a monologue of teacher teaching all the time and students do not speak unless they are asked a question. What they say when they are answering the question would be used as part of their oral mark. They can not digress or discourse about what they think on any subject matter. We tell them that it's not up to them, the information is proven and that's why it's in our curriculum and books and there is nothing further to discuss. All they have to do is learn the information and then use it when we test them to show they remember it.
In an ideal classroom, on the other hand, students should be able to discuss anything, work in groups to help each other and learn through discovery and application. The teacher should assist them in directing them in the right direction in their search and guiding students to become better manage their time to enjoy what they are doing more and to produce more. I strongly believe that students could always gain knowledge that their teachers are not even aware of. That should make us proud and strengthen our believe in our students.

How many times do we hear, or even say, in front of the whole class, 'I don't know how else to say this' or 'Am I speaking Chinese?' or 'I don't know what else to do to get you to learn... should I make a handstand?' or even 'I give up; it's no use'? This kind of comments can be very discouraging to children, even if they were not the target of such comments. This reverse brainstorming was one of the first activities we did at my school after a Positive Discipline Training. Working with 4 and 5 year olds, we had to think of turning some common rules around so that they become positive rules. Instead of: "Don't run in the corridoor, we say "Always walk slowly and carefully". Instead of: " Don't forget to say Hello and Goodbye" we say: "Always remember to say Hello and Goodbye". Instead of : "Don't speak unless you have placed your arm in the air", we say: "Please put your arm in the air and wait for your turn to speak."
I do my best to create a warm and welcoming classroom by setting the example and greeting my children with enthusiasm. I let them share their previous experiences while coming on their way to school. I use the above positive rules and try to speak in a positive way, making sure they know that all types of bullying are un acceptable. I think that one of the best ways to build confidence and self esteem is to focus on strenghts and congratulate children on all their accomplishments. They feel that they only learn if they try and that it is normal to make mistakes.I would like to share a quote that I love:

There are many ways for teachers to weaken their students' confidence, most of the times unknowingly. All the things we do in front of our students can either reinforce good or bad attitudes towards learning or treating the othes. It's necessary to encourage in a positive way to foster the self- esteem. However, we're human and we there's a chance for us to commit mistakes, specially in the classrooms where we spend so many hours a day.
