Stradlater

1.
"He always looked all right, Stradlater, but for instance, you should've seen the razor he shaved himself with. It was always rusty as hell and full of lather and hairs and crap" (27).
2.
Stradlater has a very messy interior as he falls to maintain his health, but his exterior or how others see him juxtaposes these aspects. He is handsome and charming, but he has an odd way of living which is unorganized.
3.
This character further emphasizes Holden's hatred towards "phonies" as Stradlater is one thing on the inside but appears to be someone different. This demonstrates his fake and untrue character.
4.

1.
"You'd like her. I mean if you tell old Phoebe something, she knows exactly what the hell you're talking about. I mean you can even take her anywhere with you" (67).
2.
Phoebe is demonstrated as a very well-rounded character that is full of intelligence and kindness. She is willing to do anything and everything at anytime. Her red hair contrasts her sympathetic and kind character.
3.
In relation to Holden's life, Phoebe represents a symbol of purity and innocence that the world seems void of now. She is also a reminder of Allie, another character that Holden truly cares for.
4.

1.
"He's got a lot of dough, now. He didn't use to. He used to be just a regular writer, when he was home. He wrote this terrific book of short sotries, The Secret Goldfish, in case you never heard of him. The best one in it was "The Secret Goldfish" (1).
2.
D.B. has made it big in Hollywood and Holden really despises him. Holden misses who D.B. used to be and how he used to write compared to now.
3.
This demonstrates how Holden loves his older brother and that he will do anything for family. Holden dislikes fakes and phonies, and this is what D.B. has become and it has been demonstrated through his writing and movies.
4.

1.
"She's a dancer', I said. 'Ballet and all. She used to practice about two hours every day, right in the middle of the hottest weather and all. She was worried that it might make her legs lousy--all thick and all. I used to play checkers with her all the time'" (17).
2.
Holden has not kept in touch with Jane, but he still seems to care for her. He reminisces about their times together and she seems to be kind and real. This is what Holden likes. She is perfect in Holden's eyes essentially.
3.
Jane was someone who remained loyal and there for Holden. Holden sees Jane as a love interest, and he doesn't want to mess things up with her.
4.

Mr. Spencer

1.
"There was this one old guy, Mr. Spencer. His wife was always giving you hot chocolate and all that stuff, and they were really pretty nice. But you should've seen him when the headmaster, old Thurmer, came in the history calss and sat down in the back of the room. He was always coming in and sitting down in the back of the room for about a half an hour" (90).
2.
This demonstrates how his teacher is really laid back and doesn't have an opinion about much, but is definitely there to care for his students and anyone else who needs his assistance.
3.
Holden seems to really look up to Mr. Spencer and have great respect for him. He was the first adult that he talked to , and this just demonstrates the respect that Holden has for those who do well for him and who are honest towards him.
4.

Robert Ackley

1.
"He was probably the only guy in the whole dorm, besides me, that wasn't down at the game. he hardly ever went anywhere. He was a very peculiar guy" (10).
2.
This demonstrates how Ackley doesn't really care to have a tidy home, but he is also someone who lies a lot and isn't truthful with most people.
3.
Holden does not like Ackley because Holden likes real and truthful people and Robert does not demonstrate this trait. This just demonstrates the real character he is and how he is true to himself and others. If he doesn't like someone he will be kind about it, but doesn't tolerate it.
4.
