במהלך תשעה מפגשים כל קבוצה מתמודדת עם אתגרים בתחום ה-STEM וצוברת נקודות על פי איכות ההגשה. בכל שבועים, כלל המשתתפים מוזמנים למפגש שעתי של המציג תכנים חדשים באופן מאתגר ומלהיב.
המסע הוא בן עשרה מפגשים, כאשר המפגש התשיעי הוא שלב הגמר, ובו הקבוצות פותרות במקביל אתגרים במשך שלוש שעות תוך יישום הידע והמיומנות שנרכשו במסע. 
מסע מדע הינה פלטפורמה חדשנית המותאמת באופן אידיאלי לתת מענה לחזון של פיתוח את מיומנויות המאה ה-21: לימוד עצמי, עבודת צוות ויצירתיות.
