Amy J. Ybarra
Learning Strategist, Kesterson ES
K-6 Nevada License
24 years in Education
Fairly new to online learning. The only time I have done online learning is through CCSD Canvas courses. I have no experience using online learning with students, other than basic computer programs like RAZ-Kids or Zearn Math. I would need to take many more courses to prepare myself to be an online or blended learning educator.

I am sure it would take additional courses and as technology evolves, there will always be other courses to add in. I am not comfortable with technology so this would seem like a good start.

The key factors to being a successful online or blended teacher are making sure that technology and teaching inform each other. It is important that students are getting what they need while engaged in online classes in addition to meeting with the staff as necessary to ensure that the instruction is appropriate and what they need. Teachers will need to use the data to adjust instruction and support as needed. The goal is to optimize student learning. If I were given the technology and software to create an online/blended learning environment, I would set up my classroom with a section of computers, student desk/table work areas and a space for me to work with small groups. I would rotate the students through the online content, independent/group work and small group with me as needed on a daily basis. I would also provide the parents with the information to continue the online work at home.

In order to make online/blended learning work in my own classroom, I would need to use the data to inform the next steps for instruction, whether it be whole group or small group. Students who need more help would work with me in a small group on a daily basis. Students who need a challenge would work with me or with another group of students as needed as well. I would need to use the data from online learning as well as face-to-face learning to ensure that I am meeting the needs of all of my students before they can proceed through lessons. Continuous contact with parents would also be necessary, especially if students were working online at home. Parents need to be informed of progress as well as struggles.

I am so new to online and/or blended learning that I am not comfortable with thinking that I could implement this anytime soon. My academic plan of 5 online/ blended courses would be the beginning of what would be years of preparation to get to a point where I would feel comfortable doing this on my own. I think it would work best in a school where several teachers were jumping onboard and could work through it together. This is not something I would want to tackle on my own. It would also take a special group of parents and students to serve as a pilot group to get it started and I can envision looping up with that group over several grade levels to really see if it is working. It would be interesting to work with the same group of students over several years in an online/blended environment so that you could compare the data to a traditional classroom to really see if it were working. By working with the same group of students over several years, you could really get to know them and know what works and what does not work. You could really drill down on data to make the best learning choices for students.
