A yurt (in Kazakh: kiiz ui) is a round, portable house. The Yurt is a traditional portable round tent used by Kazakh nomads for centuries. It is designed to be easily assembled, disassembled, and transported, making it perfect for the nomadic lifestyle. Structure and Construction: 1.Kerege (Lattice walls):The walls are made from a wooden lattice framework called kerege. These wooden pieces fold easily for transport but provide a strong, flexible structure when expanded. 2.Roof poles:Wooden poles called uyk radiate from the shanyrak (the circular crown) to the kerege walls, forming the roof’s frame. 3.Shanyrak (Central crown):The shanyrak is a circular wooden ring at the top of the yurt. It supports the roof poles and has a hole in the middle to let in light and air, symbolizing the universe in Kazakh culture. 4.Kiiz (Felt covering):The entire frame is covered with thick, warm felt called kiiz, made by felting sheep’s wool. This felt protects the yurt from cold wind, rain, and snow, while keeping the inside warm in winter and cool in summer. Function and Importance:The yurt is a symbol of Kazakh culture and hospitality. Its design allows for quick assembly and disassembly, making it ideal for moving with herds during seasonal migrations. Inside, the yurt is decorated with traditional textiles and symbols, reflecting the family’s heritage.
