Saghab Torbati et al. (2025) introduced an explainable artificial intelligence, also known as XAI, framework aimed at improving the diagnosis of bipolar disorder through the analysis of electroencephalography data. The study looked at patterns in brain activity using Hjorth parameters measuring frequency patterns from different brainwave types to differentiate between bipolar patients and healthy controls. A dataset comprising resting state, eyes closed EEG records from 20 individuals with bipolar disorder and 20 healthy participants was utilized to ensure balanced representation. The researchers evaluated the model's generalizability using a leave-one-subject-out cross-validation, LOSOCV, approach. Among various machine learning classifiers tested, the linear support vector machine, SVM, achieved the highest accuracy of 92% when analyzing activity parameters in the beta and gamma frequency bands. To interpret the model's decisions, XAI techniques such as Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations, LIME, were used revealing that anterior brain regions significantly contributed to the classification. These findings suggest that Hjorth parameters combined with XAI methods, offer a promising avenue for objective and interpretable bipolar disorder diagnosis. The study underscores the potential of integrating EEG based biomarkers with machine learning to advance mental health diagnostics. The study did have some limitations such as the concern for major depressive disorders in comparison to bipolar disorder being identified and the small sample size provided.

Torbati, M.

The study by Torbati et al. (2025) is a good step forward in identifying objective diagnostic criteria for bipolar disorder. Using an EEG and AI is non-invasive and may aid in making more timely and accurate diagnoses for those with bipolar disorder. This would be especially helpful in ensuring quality outcomes for those with this disorder. I think that using technology, such as an EEG and explainable AI, could help in the follow up of treating those with bipolar. What I mean by this is that an EEG and XAI can be used after the implementation of medication and therapy to assess brain wave activity in the anterior portion of the brain. In the future, I would like to see a larger sample size in addition to more detailed information on the participants such as medication uses, co-morbidities whether medical or mental health conditions, additional life stressors, and the diversity of the participants. Overall, this seems to be a helpful step forward in identifying bipolar disorder.

Relator- Being a relator, I enjoy small and intimate groups compared to being the life of the party. Having close and intimate relationships is important to me and is highly beneficial to developing a team. It is beneficial in developing a team because we learn to trust and rely on one another. These relationships last and developing an innovative project requires long-term commitment.

Belief- This is important in being a team lead because of the strong send of purpose in my life. Having a clear focus and purpose will help me to be effective in leading my team and keeping us all focused on our goals and outcomes for this project.

Learner- I have always enjoyed learning since I was a child. In being a learner, I will strive to gain as much knowledge on this topic to help it be successful in the implementation of it. In gaining knowledge, I will be effective in teaching and sharing that knowledge with my team.

Positivity- This is a strength that I have as a leader because it is easy for me to give praise and find the upside of anything that we may face. It gives confidence and empowers my team to keep pressing forward despite challenges. I have seen much better results in projects when there is someone on the team.

Responsibility- In carrying the strength of responsibility, this helps me to conduct myself in a proper, ethical, legal, and upright manner. It is important to me to make decisions that are for the purpose and to maintain the trust of my team. I persevere until I am successful.

Carter- Communication - This will be a big responsiblity and need for the team. I have good strengths, but many of them are because I enjoy solitude, so having a communicator on the team will be important in ensuring everyone is on the same page and is allowed a voice on the team.

Rachel- Restorative- Rachel's Rolse will be important because she can help the team to problem solve and will help with identifying underlying causes of problems and find solutions. She will also help the team with her quality of being detail-oriented.

Abraham- Arranger- This role will be important in coordinating meeting times, dates, place, coordinating with shareholders, and keeping the team on task. Arrangers remain calm under pressure and we will need this to keep our team in balance.

Matthew- Maximizer- Matthew will be an important asset to our team because he will focus on the strengths of the team and use that to seek top-tier results in our presentation of the innovation. He will help us to be selective in where we apply our time, energy, and resources.

Faith- Futuristic- Faith will help the team remain inspired as we work on a long-term innovation being implemented. She will help us to stay focused on future goals and will share her inspiration and hope with the team.
