What to do at school or home if there is a fire.
2. Understand the dangers of fire.
3. Know the role of a fire fighter and how they are helpers.

Today I noticed that children were unwilling to participate in the class discussion, looked bored, tune out, distracted with other relatives in their home, were falling asleep and would walk away from their tablet. Ms. Luz tried to get their attention by using a puppet then with a music and movement song but that didn't help. What I learned today is that you are not always going to have good days and Ms. Luz didn't give up I noticed she was doing her best to finish her lesson.

This week they had been talking about the lungs and she connected it to The story of The Three Little Pigs. The big bad wolf would huff and puff to blow down the houses. At first I was like what does this book have to do with what she talked about but then when I saw her making connection the the emotions (feeling) and lungs it made sense to me. That's something I like about her how she always uses book and props to make connections to what she is talking about.

When a student is absent their picture goes inside the heart. Then they sing a "we wish you well" song.
The song goes like this
We wish you well
We wish you well
All through the day today
We wish you well

She then went over the calendar and reminded the children there is no class for two days.

For music and movement children danced and sang to "Baby Shark"

Parents had been asked to collect bottle caps of different color if possible for an activity. The children had to sort the bottle caps by color. Sorting bottles caps by color is an excellent activity for beginners sorters. For today's show and tell children had to tell the class what color of bottle caps they had and count them. This gave Ms. Luz and Ms. Claudia the opportunity to see up to what number each children knew how to count.

She then reviewed the color by using the color song and read White Rabbit's Color Book by Alan Baker

I like the activity of counting the bottle caps. Children are being taught that there is a one to one correspondence of number to objects. There is a big difference between being able to recite the words for the numbers in order than understanding what the number words really mean. A parent only had white caps so he paint the top with markers. There is no need to buy items we could always encourage parents to make modifications with what they have available at home. Another thing that I liked was that she used the Baby Shark song the children were really engage and stayed focused. In the future I plan to use bottle caps there are endless activities that could be done with the caps. Ms. Luz encouraged parents to collect more for future activities with patterns.

Her class won perfect attendance this month. The theme for this week is: "What is Family"
Activity: Each student drew a family portrait for homework. Its nice to see how the all use different emotions for their monsters.
She also introduce rhyming words with AT.

The book for today was about from the moment Bella wakes up, her day goes wrong. She hates her breakfast egg, she won't share, she has a hurting foot, her supper is too hot, and her bath is too cold. And then it's no, no, no to bedtime. But at last a yawn, a story, and a kiss from mother end the day, with the promise of a cheerful tomorrow.

Children are often bored for a variety of reasons, such as not being challenged or simply not feeling motivated by the subject being discussed. I really like how Ms. Luz is always making sure children engaged during story time by asking them questions. She is always looking for ways to improve her teaching methods. She likes her students to stay engage to the songs or discussions even if its just by them using gestures. Some children are still shy and don't like to dance or share out loud. This is something I plan to do as a future educator if I see something is not working find ways to make adjustments. The book she read today helps children to be able to express how they feel to their parents. Sometime young children have bad days and parents need to allow them space for them to express their feelings.

I love how Ms. Luz used finger play songs to help children develop gross and fine motor skill, improve memory, and gain social skills among other benefits. She used stickers to make puppets for the her fingers and children were engaged and would respond when Ms. Luz would ask how many monkeys were left. She was surprised when she didn't have anymore monkeys on her fingers and they said zero no more monkey. She told them yes that right when we don't have anything left it's zero. I also like the book she used in today's class called A Family Is a Family Is a Family. This book looks at the many types of families some children are raise by grandparents and others by two dads or two moms. Something I like that I observe is that parents feel comfortable asking her question. She doesn't make them feel like if they are asking irrelevant questions. Before class was over she gave them a preview about what they will be learning next week. I like that because child will be somewhat prepared on what to expect.

I love all the props Ms. Luz makes she made a poster with all the habitats she will be taking about. She added both hand drawn and stickers animals. This just shows how much time she puts into planning and preparing her lessons. I also like how she uses brain break action songs. Using these brain breaks enhances attentiveness, concentration, and focus. In my future classroom I plan to use brain breaks to allow children to release their energy. The topic on habitat is perfect for children since many of them love to observe animals, they usually don't give much thought about how and where an animal lives until you begin to discuss the idea of 'habitats'. With this topic children are going to learn more about their favorite animals because they are going to be doing research.

I feel todays class was rushed because Ms. Luz and Ms. Claudia had to join a meeting right after class. We covered everything but it went by so fast. If this was my classroom and I had to attend a meeting I would have eliminated some songs. I would've spent more time of hearing from the children about their family trees. Especially since you could tell some put so much effort into them. I would have focused more on what the children were interested for example on the if we are happy and we know it song. Children were having fun dancing. We have been spending so much time about talking about feeling. We could have done a recap to see what they remember about this topic. On Fridays she usually gives them a preview of what they will be doing the following week and this time she didn't do that. I like that she reminded parents that their was no class on Monday. Ms. Luz also reminded the children if the go out to the park over the weekend that it was important for them to wear their masks and us hand sanitizer.

I really like the graph she created and the colors she used to make it stand out. I like how she used pets since we are still taking about animals and their habitats. I also like the videos she showed because it asked questions and children had the opportunity to respond and be actively engaged. She would stop the video and as a class we solved the problems. One of the activities I plan to us in the future is a homework assignment she gave. The children are learning numbers 1-10. Ms. Luz asked the parent to write the number for them in a paper going across and with the advertisement paper they receive in the mail the children had to find the number, cut, and glued them underneath the one the parents wrote for them.

I'm so happy Ms. Luz finally introduce new songs. But the reason why she plays the same songs repetitively is because when children hear or read the same book over and over in a row they are learning the storyline. It might be boring or annoying to do the same thing over and over but this is extra practice that children need to learn things. I really like how each family interpreted the habitat they choose in different ways. Some used shoes boxes, other just a pieces of construction paper with stickers, others used rubber animal toys. Each child had the responsibility to teach their classmates important facts about their habitat and the kind of animals that live their. As a future educator I want to build confidence in my students so that they can speak in public. Ms. Luz is always encouraging the children to not be afraid to talk but then again she doesn't force them. She respects their decision when they tell her they are not ready. Lilian has always been so shy but today she was so excited to present her diorama when Ms. Luz asked "who wants to go first" right away she raised her hand and said me. She spoke nice and loud and that it what I want. I want my students to be able to share with out being nervous and to feel proud of themselves.

Ms. Luz is so attentive and responsive to all my questions and concerns. I really liked the activity for today with the van diagram comparing the similarities and differences between the two community helpers. She then told me that during their fourth year, children begin to compare things in terms of similarities and differences. This is an important skill that leads to classifying and other reasoning abilities.

Today she stayed after class to answer questions I might of had since the past couple of days she had to log off quick to go to a meeting. I told her that on Monday we had a discussion about celebrating holiday in the classroom. That a classmate had mentioned we could send a survey home to see what families celebrate. Then I mentioned that BPUSD didn't allow any kind of celebration. So she then gave me an example of what they do for instance for Halloween they do use the word Halloween instead Children can dress up as a character from a book! The student must provide the actual book or a card with the title and author. The student shares with the class their favorite part of the book or their favorite character. They use pumpkins as science experiments. They also talk about harvest and the color changing of leaves.

I like the idea of not celebrating holidays because sometime its more work for teachers. Ms. Luz mentioned to me that before for mother's day she would spend so much money on getting supplies so that the children could make their mom's a nice gift and then mom's would complain because another teacher gift was better.

Today right after class the parents had a meeting with the person from the district who is in charge of the child enrollment. She notified parents of the new way they will be submitting paper work whether it be immunization records or any other document. She also provided them with information about the resources that will be available for them during the month of November. On November 5 at 10am right after class they are going to have a workshop called introduction to IPAD. In this workshop they are going to show parents how to navigated the different apps. I think this is really nice because some of them are still having difficulties navigating the apps such as uploading photos. What I liked about this is that before the meeting started parents were asked what language did they prefer the meeting to be in and they all agreed that they wanted the information in Spanish. Having someone who speaks their language makes them feel valued. After the meeting Ms. Luz and I stay to talk she told me that parents don't show up to the meetings/workshops provided to them. She sends them reminder the week of and day of the workshop. My response was I wonder why? Has the person in charge of hosting these workshops tried to make it relevant to the parents interest. I them mentioned what we did at Padres Fuertes when we sent a survey and asked parents what kind of topics they wanted to learn more about.

Reflection for the week

This week I learned the importance of observations. Some just see it as a method of assessing young children as they develop. But Ms. Luz takes the information provided by Ms. Claudia and myself to created activities to promote growth on skills, document the success of those skills, and then reflect and assesses. I am amazed that thru the observations Ms. Luz has been able to identify children who need additional help. With evidence gather she has been able to identify children with special needs and that's why she invited Ms. Nancy the disabilities specialist to join her class and observe the students who Ms. Luz had concerns about. We came to find out that in the afternoon class the student who Ms. Luz wanted Ms. Nancy observed was already offered helped by another program but mom decided not to sign the IEP because grandma can't be taking the child to 2 different sites. Dad had asked Ms. Luz for help so she told Ms. Nancy we should also try talking to dad since he was concern with his child's behavior. When Ms. Luz was taking to Ms. Nancy she mentioned she also uses my observation notes and what I had provided for her. It made me feel like I was doing my part and I felt good about myself. Now I try to focus more on the children than what Ms. Luz is doing. I really hope the parents come to an agreement with Ms. Nancy for the best of the child.

I loved some many techniques and strategies that Ms. Luz used today. One of the was giving children choices this helps them feel like they have some power and control over what they do, and is a step in growing up. You could see it in their face (power) when the got to choose what commitment and reading strategy they got to select. Another thing I like was the game. There is a set of twins that don't contribute much and by Ms. Luz doing these kinds of activities she gets to see if the are understanding the concept. The girls went to look for the items and it brought happiness to my face because they are understanding and were happy to share with their classmates. Mom works at night so she is usually sleeping while her daughters are on webex and dad is at work the eight year old brother is the one who makes sure they connect to class. They things Ms. Luz does to get all the observations needed to make sure all her students are succeeding makes me want to be as good as her one day.

Using a puppet in a preschool setting can help and be beneficial in many ways. For example in this case using a puppet to greet and say hello. This little bit of communication will introduce lessons on initiating a conversations with someone new and setting example of how to be friendly. When she introduce patterns she started of with shapes and children grasp the concept quickly. She then used the sound of animal and fruits which I really like because preschoolers love animals and are familiar with them. When I have my own classroom I will probably introduce patterns with shapes and colors and then with Children’s nursery rhymes and music. Music also has simple patterns.

Ms. Luz introduce the word Fall last week and kept repeating it this week. She doesn't really elaborate on the topic beside what she mentioned about the leaves changing colors and the weather getting cooler. I would personally incorporate a book about fall to my lesson plan. I understand they don't celebrate holidays in this school district. But in the future I would like to supporting diversity and multicultural learning in my classroom. I will teach children about different races, cultures, and traditions such as different Fall Harvest traditions and celebrations around the world, encouraging students to share their own experiences, and reinforcing the importance of community and appreciation. I always wonder what do children really now about fall. Maybe she could also using something also to represent the letter F.
